Is it me or is Youtube becoming slower and slower each week streaming videos ?

Does Youtube restrict bandwidth to its users like if you watch set amount of videos in a set amount of time they then put you into the slow lane etc ?

Yes, I've noticed it too.

Max I get while streaming videos is about 60KB/s which is ridiculous. It's not my connection because I get 2.33MB/s from NNTP and Rapidshare.

Video buffers for 10 seconds, plays for 1 second, buffers for 10 seconds plays for 2 seconds. On and on.

I actually punched my desk in rage this morning, it was so infuriating.

The other day all videos were playing fine for me whether it be in 480/720/1080p, but today I've had to open videos on seperate tabs and leave them to buffer for 5+ minutes before trying to play them. ¬¬

According to that link : Your average video speed at this location from 17 February 2010 to 18 March 2010 was 6.02 Mbps. :o

Its crazy ive gotta more than capable internet connection and yet I cant ever stream youtube at hd and even normal bit rate struggles at times.I can stream iplayer at Hd but not youtube must be their servers getting a hammering or some user bandwidth restriction.

TRied that link and the demo video and it was doing about 1 or 2mbit then switched it to 720p which apparently requires 3mbit and it just about kept up varying between 5 and 1mbit download

a lot of the time if the video has HD available then the 360p is much faster and still fine to view.
I think its just down to time of day and what is america doing, back in the day you knew when it was morning on the east coast because the internet would slow right down and maybe youtube as high demand reflects that still

Try changing your home country to russia and see if that helps avoid the rush

I doubt all new video is hosted globally immediately, some of it must be coming a greater distance and under more demand

During peak time we have been having a massive slowdown on a university connection. 360p stuff takes forever to stream and that link does show a far slower speed compared to the rest of lincoln!

"Your average video speed at this location from 17 February 2010 to 18 March 2010 was 6.91 Mbps."

tbf, I do get days where some videos are really slow. Usually it's all instant though regardless of quality.

Well, it does say your location, so I am not sure if it means you directly or your local area.

Also, it is obviously basing the results on some data from the last month. May not compare directly to you, but I doubt they just make it up as they go along. :)

So many server and isp issues :)

It's not a fix, but you should consider using the greasmoneky auto buffer/hd script. Automatically buffers, plays, uses the highest possible res oh and it removes adds from videos :) plus a handy option to disable any one bit.

Can't make youtube faster but you can at least make it easier.

My line is capable of streaming 720p on other sites, but it crawls on Youtube a lot of the time. Using that speed check thing above, it is rock steady at around 4.5MB/s on 360p and 480p, but switching to 720p it fluctuates between 1MB/s and 5MB/s. Same as what silversurfer was saying.

Youtube grows at some crazy rate, I can see the service become slow at certain points but the question is how long before Google is going to try making Youtube profitable.
