Not sure if this is a browser or a fault with the site itself but when viewing a video and switching to HD (720 or 1080), it doesn't do anything and remains on 360/480.

Mainly using Firefox but I've seen this happen with Chrome and Internet Explorer.

Anyone else get this and know how to fix it?

It's never as seamless as it should be for me either, on Chrome..

Sometimes if it auto switches, it will just fail to play until I refresh it.

Delete the browser cache and delete any Youtube cookies?

On Chrome I've got a plugin which automatically loads the 720p version (if one exists) - perhaps try disabling any plugin you've got which assists with Youtube?

Its a youtube problem - sometimes if I switch quality the gear thing spins indefinitely and the quality never changes and if I try clicking another part of the video everything stops working and I have to reload the page to get the video streaming again.

Yeh I get this problem quite a lot. I've found it's more likely to occur if I'm switching video quality whilst in fullscreen view. So if I make the video windowed, and then hit the change quality button, it will usually work instantly or with a slight delay.

I've been getting this a lot lately.

If I change the resolution to 1080p then pause and play again it works fine.

This +1

Also I need to refresh to make the video start loading in correctly (on IE 10, win 8)

Tried it. And I'll see if any such plugin exists for FF.

Virgin Media.

This is exactly the problem.

Been happening a lot to me lately, seems to be a new thing.

Rather than swap instantly, pause the video and buffer, it seems to just continue to play and switch much late or...not at all.

Not sure if it's a bug or intentional in order that video plays 'seamlessly' before upping the quality.

One of the reasons I download YT videos locally and play the full file from HDD instead of stream these days. Too many stream issues.

Virgin is your issue...

Theres another thread around here somewhere that explains.. lemme find it....

they (Virgin Media) have a cache server to save bandwidth, but it often has issues.

This.

You can force Youtube to load from Youtube and not Virgin's caches.

Virgin just use a proxy from the normal site.

Load Youtube from the HTTPS site, not the normal, and your loading from them, not Virgin.

Alternatively, your can add a ?1 to the end of the url.. eg:

ww.youtube.com/watch?v=3g8xrpjcT4o?1

There's always something wrong with YouTube.

Very true. For a Google service, it's a bit of a wreck and not particularly user-friendly at all. Every recent decision seems to be making it worse to e.g. the new homepage layout, suggesting videos you've already watched etc.
