I have Sky broadband which downloads of usenet at 1.8mbs, which is pretty much max on my line.

But when ever i watch a reasonable length youtube video in either 480/720/1080p (especially the latter 2) it buffers like mad, which doesn't make any sense.

Could anyone help me with diagnosing this problem?

Thanks.

Connection Speed

Down - 15266 kbps
Up - 1150 kbps

Line Attenuation

Down - 26.5 dB
Up - 16.0 dB

Noise Margin

Down - 6.2 dB
Up - 8.1 dB

Is youtube the only site this occurs on? Have you tried other video sharing sites to see if you can reproduce the problem?

You expect to stream 1080p video with a 1.8Meg line?

I think he mean megabits (Mb) rather than megabytes (MB). :)

Have you tried a different browser? Try Opera and see if it makes any difference.

I started having issues playing youtube clips on Chrome two days ago. Probably just a bad update.

The yellow is jitter, not packet loss. You should have a look at the Sky forum and see if anyone else is complaining about YouTube.

I've had a quick look around and there doesnt seem to be any threads about it.

I've updated the monitor because i rebooted the router and it changed my IP.

Seems that now its effecting generic tasks, like downloading the newest version of flash took quite a while for some strange reason.

i get the same here im using chrome on sky unlimited pretty much the same speed as you and you tube is a nightmare for me to always buffering.

You do have some minor packet loss on the graph.

Ran a few speed tests:

Needless to say i should be getting 16mb minimum.

Just rebooted the router and now i'm getting this sync:

Code:
System Up Time: 0:06:15
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN MER 1072 1208 0 3006 7800 0:01:31
LAN Up 5549 5070 0 12597 3918 0:06:15
WLAN Up 190 61 0 185 5 0:05:53
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5824 kbps 1088 kbps
Line Attenuation 22.5 dB 13.5 dB
Noise Margin 6.1 dB 8.0 dB

It's possible it's a Sky issue. So much traffic flows from youtube that ISP's have special routes and policies in place to manage the load. Not so long ago Virgin was having similar issues due to dodgy cache servers.

Have you tested during the day and late at night?

Yeah. It doesnt just seem to effect youtube now, its effecting normal browsing behaviour.

My sync speed has also slowed down a lot as well, i was syncing around 18mb before.

Just clicked on take speed test on youtube and it said:

Your average video speed at this location from 12 Dec 2012 to 10 Jan 2013 was 7.07 Mbps.

I'm currently struggling to buffer a 360p video of 30mins in length.

Thanks for your contribution to this thread, you've made 2 posts and they have both been completely pointless in every single way.

Very much akin to the sky tech support on the phone, MissChief must work for sky I bet after the defending sky to the hilt in other threads ;)

As above mate, test socket and check stats there.
