YouTube Premium

Sadly I have been forced to pay for Premium now, but like hell I am paying what they want so I went down the Ukrainian route.

Using UrbanVPN and Revolut payment just stops with the spinning circle, tried disabling the VPN at that point but no progress.

Any other combinations / suggestions?

I read someone say to open youtube, then open a second tab and find a 24/7 live stream to play on it, mute it, then go back to the first tab and it doesn't give the disable adblock pop up,

so i tried that earlier and not had the disable adblock popup yet after trying ~10+ videos, so maybe they're onto something there? time will tell,

but i have just had a pop up offering me 1 free month of premium, think i'm gonna hit the button on it

Proton VPN and Ukraine worked for me with Monzo.

Had the exact same issue few months ago doing it for a friend, same VPN and same payment card, using my desktop.

He then did it on his phone using same VPN, no spinning circle, went through in seconds.

Update, the above method appears to be working, i've watched probably ~30 vids today with no pop up telling me to disable adblock, (i was getting one every several videos before that)

What i have noticed is that the video will take a few seconds to load, and while it's waiting it will show the video timer being anywhere from ~6 - 15 seconds,
so it's like it's trying to load an advert but then fails and plays the video with no other adverts interfering

Update: today 20/10 still working :)

Talking about tricks. One that I used on mobile occasionally. If you load a video, when the ad starts lower the video and scroll through the feed to find a short. Click on the short. Back out of the short and the ad should stop and your video will load.

Nice one, this worked perfectly.

The key is to do it in the browser with the VPN active, not the dedicated Youtube app.

great comment in, earlier linked, reddit ublockO/youtube discussion

Maybe, it's time to raise the stakes for companies like Google and go a more active route by simulating the absence of the ad blocker. Request the ads from the server, maybe even execute the ad scripts in a restricted environment. But just don't show the ads to the user.
This would poison Google's ad impression statistics and make them useless for billing. The mere danger of this happening on a larger scale as ad blockers become more mainstream might be enough incentive for Google to stop trying to bully the users of web firewalls like uBlock Origin.

A physical workaround I use at work for shorter videos <10mins which may/may not have been mentioned before (not searching 23 pages to find out) - If an ad starts to load at the start of a video, hit the "next video" arrow in the player then, once new video that loads, immediately hit the browser "back" arrow and the original video will now play without any start-up ads (mid-rolls etc still work on longer videos though).

For me I updated the filters of UBlock last night and all the YT faff has disappeared for now.

I had had some problems this morning(even using latest ublock filters), and did then use below solution,
but, later, ublocko seemed to work again (w/o updating) - there is a sequencing issue as ianh said.

workaround from reddit thread is editing following javascript as the URL target on a bookmark, which then opens current video as an embed in new tab, text needs to be be pasted verbatim.

javascript:void%20function(){(function(){var%20e=window.location.href,o=/^.*(%3F:(%3F:youtu\.be\/|v\/|vi\/|u\/\w\/|embed\/|shorts\/)|(%3F:(%3F:watch)%3F\%3Fv(%3F:i)%3F=|\%26v(%3F:i)%3F=))([^%23\%26\%3F]*).*/,t=e.match(o);if(t){var%20i=t[1],h=%22%3C!DOCTYPE%20html%3E%3Chtml%3E%3Cbody%3E%22+i+'%3Cp%3E%3Ciframe%20width=%221080%22%20height=%22720%22%20src=%22https://www.youtube.com/embed/'+i+'%22%3E%3C/iframe%3E%3C/body%3E%3C/html%3E',n=window.open();n.document.write(h)}else%20alert(%22No%20YouTube%20video%20ID%20found%20on%20the%20current%20page.%22)})()}();
