YouTube Red

Does this mean if someone wants to view PewDiePies videos they would need to subscribe? So not all bad news then ;-) j/k

Its gonna be very very difficult to get people to pay for something they are used to getting free

No you will still see that long faced skunk, but with ads. Unless you sub to remove the ads (and gain the other additions that come with it).

I'm guessing the content will start disappearing then behind this paywall since they wouldn't put youtubers in this new red service and still allow their content to be accessed for free. I won't be paying for it, quite happy with freeview and most youtube stuff isn't up to the same standard as traditional tv broadcasting imo.

That's not how it's working, it's to get rod if the adds, so it's not going to be hidden behind a pay wall. I believe youtubers can go behind a pay wall. But I expect that will be far and few between, as what makes the monies is massive views and auxiliary money making.

And watch far more on youtube than I do on TV. There's plenty of very good stuff on youtube, you don't have to site their and just watch fail compilations and people ranting.

Looks like the quickest way to cut their site visitations. The most popular youtubers are watched by people who WONT pay for the service. I wonder if they will stand to gain anything by cutting content, as i cant imagine all the kids that watch 'lets plays' are going to dish out cash for a youtube subscription.

I will probably pay it if my regular content is removed or start my own youtube in an imitation knock off site and make millions until i am shut down and made bankrupt by youtubes lawyers.

If this is true  and they create a two tier system with some contents disappearing form You Tube and only available on the subscription version this will kill You Tube as a platform.

They cant expect people who are (legally) used to getting their content for fee to start paying for it. They will just migrate to another platform.

You're assuming another platform will be sustainable. With declining revenue from adverts, it might actually be difficult to create a rival platform which offers free access.

I doubt Google decided to launch this new service purely out of greed. More likely its the pressure of declining revenues from adverts.

I don't this this is the same thing? Music Key is only for music videos. Red sounds like it's all content based?

It's not the same thing, right now we have play music + youtube music key. Music key is being renamed to 'Youtube Music' and will still be included in a play subscription. There are reports that a play subscription will actually include youtube red and visa versa, but unless I'm mistaken they are only reports right now.

They've said that you get Google all access music with the YouTube Red service, and vice versa.

I'm already a Google Music subscriber, so it's a nice bonus and good value if you compare it to spotify I guess. Time will tell if it has enough to become a standalone subscription though.

YouTube Red works with Google Play Music, so subscribe to one and automatically get access to the other.

Another platform will be sustainable as long as the content moves there with the content makers. Just a group of the most popular game commentators moving to another site would be enough to keep it running.

I believe that they are launching this to further commercialise a service which has really bloomed and started to replace television for most people. The amount of money obtained from advertising is crazy high, declining or not and that a move for more cash at the expense of the watchers is out of greed, as they are obviously making a lot of money relative to cost of running. Hell their content is free for them as well as us and they don't pay youtubers all that much either if you consider the views they get.

Thanks for the link. I too already have Google Play Music and have for a long time now.

Red offers more than what we currently get with Music Key? So they are giving us even more for our money than what we already pay.

This is a little off topic. I recently needed to update my card but hadn't managed to update it before my sub ran out. So when I resubbed (a day or two after) I got a message which stated Samsung owners get the service free for 3 months and then the regular price of £9.99 after that. Might be worth checking if you own a Samsung phone (I have the Note 4 :))

That is a rather bold claim. What do you base it on?

Youtube doesn't actually make a profit, in fact it has made big losses. Why? The revenue from advertising is shrinking. I fail to see how another "free" service can be made sustainable without the sort of intrusive advertising that people despise.

The reality is that people HAVE to pay for content one way or another. With ad revenue declining, it's going to have to come from our own pockets. £9.99 for Youtube is not actually that bad given how ubiquitous the service is, especially if Music is thrown in.

As I understand it, the free 90 days only apply if you've never had a Google Music sub before - so you may find you can't use the free 90 days.

As for what the new subscription entails, existing subscribers get this:

Google Play Music all access
YouTube Music Key (accessed via youtube itself)

The new sub will have the following:

Google Play Music All Access
YouTube Music (available via youtube on the web, and via a new YouTube Music app)
YouTube Red, which itself includes ad free videos, exclusive/paywall content, and some YouTube Kids content I think also.

Sometime in the new year will also be the family pass for ~£15 which will allow upto 6 people access to the same content.

I just rechecked my email and it states Monthly Subscription - First Charge on Jan 12, 2016.

If this did work, maybe it allowed it because I had a new card to use? but surely it would go by the name on record and address.

Shows up as £0.00 so I'l keep an eye out to see if next month I get charged.

I can't say I've even used Music Key at all since we received it though. I thought music could be played with the screen off? Every time I turn my screen off, so does the YT app.

£9.99 to watch a reality show with pewdiepie in it, id rather wrap my sack in barbed wire with one end tied to a breezeblock and slig it out of the 3rd floor window.

The £9.99 spent on wire and blocks would be better value for money.

Best post on here today. Take a bow squire lol :D

Happy days then! :)

One of the changes they've made is to allow screen off playback (not live yet)

Am I the only one who thinks there are way too many "paid" streaming sevices?

Nope, it's getting pretty bad, and it will only get worse.

I thought these sub ideas would be good for services, one I wanted was for music, but all these different types of ones, Amazon/Netflix etc the choice is crazy and not everything is available on everything else.
