This video on youtube hailing this bus driver a hero.
This guy wasn't paying attention, he crashed into a lamp post and afterwards the bus isn't going very fast. So there was no saving the passengers going on.
Also after the crash he just calmly as you like does something with his phone instead of seeing if any of his passengers are injured.
Not a hero just a dumb***.

no, another car hit a lamppost causing it to fall into the path of the bus, I'd like to see you try and avoid it.
He's probably getting his phone out as he was going to contact the bus company?
Oh and as for checking the passengers, you can blame the Chinese government for not implementing any Good Samaritan Laws.

It looks as if the pole comes through the window as the bus is travelling normally rather than the bus hitting a stationary pole, the driver is pretty quick to avoid getting hit himself and thus losing control and potentially causing a serious incident, as well as securing his vehicle and checking the passengers before presumably using his phone to call the emergency services.
As for whether passengers could have been injured, a slow moving bus is no barrier to injury on a bus, even just sudden braking can result in a passenger injury.
Was he hailed a hero? The video doesn't make that kind of conclusion. Lucky, yes.....

Watch the whole video and then come back and apologise, because to be frank it was amazing he wasn't killed outright
