Just how long would it take?

I had this discussion with a guy at work, now he reckons that if we became extinct there would be no trace of humanity, no building nothing after 1000 years.

I called bs and reckoned it was more like 10,000 years if not more.

Anyone care to postulate?

depends if you mean nothing on the surface it's a lot longer if you mean nothing at all, iirc we've found remains/objects/buildings from over 10,000 years ago.

Channel 4 did a documentary a few years ago about this (called 'Life after us' or something like that). From what I remember there would still be structures around after a few thousand years and there would be traces of stuff like nuclear waste for millions of years.

On a related note :

Humans Will be Extinct in 100 Years

Microbiologist Frank Fenner, one of the scientists who helped eradicate smallpox, claims that the human race, along with other species, will be extinct within 100 years due to overpopulation, "unbridled consumption" and climate change.

"It´s an irreversible situation. I think it´s too late. I try not to express that because people are trying to do something" said Dr. Fenner, whose statements follow similar comments recently made by Prince Charles and Dr. Nicholas Boyle.

Retired colleague Stephen Boyden said: "Frank may well be right, but some of us still harbour the hope that there will come about an awareness of the situation and, as a result the revolutionary changes necessary to achieve ecological sustainability."

Anyway, I reckon if humans do become extinct the Giza Pyramids will always be there for a reminder of intelligent life.

There was a good programme on this, showed what would happen if we simply vanished.

Hoover dam would still be producing electricity for a 100 years.

They recon some structures could still be noticable and standing after thousands, can't remember which though.

Anyone remember the name of the programme?

The days humans die or something?

Its on discovery chan all the time. "Life after Humans"

Look at Chernobyl, thats the best example we have of leaving a city or 2 to go back to nature.

I thought after 100 years it would be pretty much overgrown depending on its climate and vegetation.

Things built out of rock may erode, but I'd have thought metal structures would be there for an incredibly long time? If we've discovered remains of our ancestors from thousands of years ago, then surely our remains would last a lot longer?

metal corrodes. but certain ones won't but they'll eventually be ground down or crushed.
