There's no point in him clipping on in most places. The size of the hook on his lanyard is so big, that it would easily come up on those clip on points where he is having a rest.

Once again this somes up the USA H&S laws. A free climb like that would never be allowed in the UK.

What makes you think they are his friends? When I saw it, I assumed he was someone desperate enough to agree to it in exchange for a little money for food or drugs.
