I really dont understand why they stopped.. I'm certain they could have made it. And why they were crossing in the first place baffles me.

Hindsight is great, ennit?

It only takes a few CMs of fast running water to knock anyone off their feet. It looked pretty hazardous before the water came anyway with very smooth wet rocks.

They were bricking it - that huge, death inducing waterfall behind them would do incredibly little to calm nerves. "Staying still and not falling over" sounds a lot more comfortable than "falling over and getting washed away".

Perhaps they were not aware the water was coming.

According to the video there was some rain, presuming up river.

Just a guess but maybe it's a seasonal tide that they gathered to watch, and they went out when it was calm for a better view. I've been in fast moving water in Thailand and it's terrifying, its easy to say they could've ran when it was at their ankles, and I assure you they could already feel the pressure behind the current.

Monumentally stupid and tragic, those screams will haunt me. I'm going to be more careful around rivers when I'm abroad.
