The whole race is insane. Insane in a glorious and impressive way, but insane. The margin for error is almost zero - get anything wrong on the very long, very windy course and you're going to crash, probably into a tree or building at very high speed. It's an imposing display of skill and courage, arguably the modern equivalent of the famous chariot racing of ancient Rome (but rather less well paid - the highest-paid sportsman of recorded history was a Roman charioteer).
