If you sat down and carefully thought about how to make a foot race as close to impossible as you could in the most elaborate way possible, you might do as good a job as Gary Cantrell. But probably not. He's made it very hard to even apply to be considered to be allowed to compete in it and the race itself is frankly ridiculous. Successful applicants get a letter of condolence. If anyone does complete the race in under 60 hours, he makes the race harder the following year. So far over 1000 ultramarathon runners have attempted the race. 14 have completed it. It's only 100 miles. Or maybe 120. Or maybe 150 if you get lost, which you probably will because the trail isn't marked and your only guide is a copy you made by hand and eye from a hand-drawn map you first see shortly before the race starts. Total variation in height is about 33,000 metres over the race - ~16500 uphill and ~16500 downhill. It will be raining, foggy and freezing. Expect snow too on the higher points. And no help during the race. If you're injured, make your own way back to the start line. If you can find it.

Due to launch in October 2018, this video outlines the series of complex maneuvers that it needs to go through in order to work as we hope it will! This telescope is going to give us an amazing perspective on our Universe, I can't wait!
