How does the 4 of clubs guess work?

I clearly thought to myself "ace of spades" and then just before he guessed the card, I consciously changed my mind to "4 of clubs"...

Surely it's some sort of unconscious suggestion he does/says?

No. :p Most of the time that unconscious suggestion rubbish is just, well, rubbish. :p It's a good way for people like Derran Brown to misdirect you though.

Let's go through the logic:

1. He doesn't know which card she is going to choose in advance.
2. Therefore, the pack could not have only had the 4 of clubs in it.
3. He only brings out the pack after she has told him that she is choosing to eliminate the red cards so he likely has 2 packs, one with all the black cards and some blanks in it, and one with all the red cards and some blanks
4. The pack he selects, must have ALL of the black cards in it to cover all of her possible choices.
5. He does a fair bit of obfuscated hand moves just between taking the deck out of the pack and spreading the cards to show the 4. He likely shuffles/flips the 4 at this stage.
7. You don't see the other black cards because they are hidden in a group behind some of the blank cards (notice how grouped the blank cards are at the end of the deck). The whole 'that is why they are all blank' is just pure lies! :p

Et voila! Not so complicated after all!

5. He does a fair bit of obfuscated hand moves just between taking the deck out of the pack and spreading the cards to show the 4. He likely shuffles/flips the 4 at this stage.
You can buy those decks for a few quid. The cards are all in order, face to face. You just push the faces apart at the one you want. It's the 4 and the 4th card in the deck. If she'd said 4 of spades he'd have gone 17 cards in. Reds one side, blacks the other.
