The average recoil force of the GAU-8/A is 10,000 pounds-force (45 kN),which is slightly more than the output of one of the A-10's two TF34 engines (9,065 lbf / 40.3 kN each). While this recoil force is significant, in practice cannon fire only slows the aircraft a few miles per hour in level flight.
The theory is with enough ammo you could make the plane go backwards. But the bullets are the size of a dagger each and the plane can only carry 1 minutes worth I believe.
There was some argument about the gun gasses causing engine problems but dont think it ever came to anything. Theres some amazing story about someone making it back with holes in their wings, they lost controls however the plane comes with more then one set and type and they landed and it was a women pilot
