So it's around the new year of 1954/55 and a request is put out for a plane that can do 4,500 mph in air. And it also needs to be able to fly to space. And re-enter the atmosphere. And land on the ground, like a normal plane. That would be a tall order today, but in 1955 it was pure sci-fi. Pretty much everything required either didn't exist or was unknown or at least solely theoretical (e.g. hypersonic aerodynamics). Plenty for engineers to get their teeth into on that project!
