The city of Detroit Michigan went bankrupt in 2013, can't say I've ever heard of a city going bankrupt before.

If you have independent borrowing powers and cannot meet your obligations to private creditors, you can, similarly to any other legal entity with such powers.

It has compound problems, but the powers that be tried to come up with a recovery plan: http://www.economist.com/news/unite...-plenty-hard-work-remains-chapter-9-draws-end. It will take them a while though. Poor Motor City.
