My friend has his Golf for sale at the moment on Autotrader... and this is the email he just received! :D

Hii ,

I really appreciate your time taking for the mail and am also delighted to hear from you the car is still available for sale and thanks for the detail you just gave about the car and am quite excited to hear from you the car is still in good conditions, Please i don't meant to be rude to you at this point i should be convience this car is genuiely owned by you and i hope all the relevant papers document is fully completed and available as well just for safety sale assurance.

Honestly speaking am getting the car unbehalf of my dear wife whom i just got married with two weeks ago.She is from uk in scoltland.Presently she is in malmo sweden my native country.

As you will quite agree with me in uk they use to right hand drive and over there in sweden we are use to left hand drive. She really find it soo difficult to drive my personal car which i left for her due to the position of the steering and she wouldn't want to risk her life to drive my car. Therefore she instructed me to buy her a uk car which she is normally used to drive in scoltland.

Right now she needed a car due to the distance from her working place to house is about an hour drive.

Am sure she will be delighted have got one for her and am counting on you now to consider the car sold to me most expecially for my wife sake.

Without taking much time i should be arranging for the payment and shipping process right away hopefully before this week runs down.

Please i want you to email me more pictures if is still available both the exterior , interior and the engine i would really appreciate that soo much because it would not be possible for me to come for the viewing due to my course programme in wales and as for the price i will offer you £7200 just becuase i know the worth of the car and moreso what you' ve stated about the car details in the advert and in additional including the advert charges you've spent soo far .

Am quite satisfied what you've mention soo far about the car and as for the shipping cost you have nothing to worry about ok!! i will take care of that myself have already consult a private maritime shipping company who's going to handle it professionally for me both the shipping cost and other necessary development concerning the shipment of the car such as cost of insurance, bill of lading and custom charges etc, because the car will be finally ship to malmo sweden.Apart from the car being shipped at your location there is other consignments the shipper will need to ship for me in some state in uk but have made it clear to him your location will be his first arrival before moving to any other destination .

However,as for the payment status am paying you a united kingdom bankers draft(GBP) issue by uk bank base which am going to instruct my business associate to send you a bankers draft via postal mail. The bankers draft is going to clear in any bank in united kingdom my bank advised and it will take maximum of 2 to 3 days working days to FULLY CLEARED INTO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT FOR VERIFICATION BY YOUR BANK MANAGEMENTS before i can own the car and once you've confirm the payment clearance and the money is finally available in your bank account the car should be hand over to the shippingagent and papers document aswell once they arrive your location. Am from sweden but presently located in uk wales on course programmes.

Thanks soo much and i really appreciate your time taking to response to my enquiry.Hopefully to hear back from you today in order to proceed further with the payment and shipping arrangements as soon as possible. I look forward to hear back from you today.

Cheers...

Lucas.

His bad English apart, why do you think this is dodgy  Banker's drafts can't be cancelled like cheques can, its essentially a piece of paper representing the bank's money which he has already given to his bank

Here's one I had from Autotrader -

I've got a really good money making opportunity you might be interested in...

I am pretty good at spotting scams and this guy sounds like a nutter but I don't really think it is dodgy. If he wants to buy the car and ship it then let him! If you have a bankers draft cleared in your account then there is nothing that he can do to revoke that money so I don't really see the problem!

EDIT > Just to qualify my statement, most of my work this summer involves exporting electronics to Nigeria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan etc so we get our fair share of dodgy offers and legitimate offers. One gets a sense of things. To the OP - were you just posting it because you think it is funny? I think it is quite funny he is spending that money on a car for his wife because the stupid lass can't learn to drive a LHD car. But dodgy, not really....

EDIT 2 > Simply tell your friend to insist that the bankers draft be drawn on a UK negotiable bank, in Pounds Sterling and then he has nothing to worry about. Once he has that paper and pays it into his bank then the money can't be withdrawn.

They can't be cancelled, but they can be (and frequently are) forged which is what this scam relies on. The draft will appear to clear initialy, but the money will be clawed back as soon as the forgery is noticed. Basicly accepting bankers drafts without some kind of verification is now very risky.

It's pretty clear to me that the OP is a very typical scam.

Would you like to buy some dehydrated water?

I think the fact the tone of the email is based as if there is already an agreement that the car is his, is enough of a clue that this is not legitimate.

"am also delighted to hear from you the car is still available for sale"

...and who the hell other than the typical 419 style scammers ever says things like that? as if they are replying to previous correspondence rather than just having found an advert.

You mean its like the cheque scams in the 60s, where the scammer makes up account numbers and the draft is cashed without any checks  I thought the whole point of running the draft through the machine is to validate its authenticity and if its a made up one it will come up on the screen instantly?
Would you like to buy some dehydrated water?

No, but I am interested in some dihydrogenoxide...

The forged draft shows correct account name, account number and sort code.

Thing is - the bank didn't issue it, Paintshop Pro did it.

Ok, but even then, when the draft is put through the machine, it surely must come up as "not issued"

It is why you insist on the draft being drawn from a UK negotiable bank where it is easy to verify the authenticity.

Sam

You can easily call the branch that produced a draft and the staff there will verify they issued it.

So long as they verify they issued it - it's cash.
