Or not, as the case may be. Rat meat and Chinese food safety

I'm flying over to Shenzhen again for two weeks on Saturday, not sure I wanted to see this! I have eaten some pretty rancid things over there though, including a crunchy frog casserole. Literally small frog shaped bags of skin with crunchy bones inside, fortunately the gravy/sauce was heavily laced with chilli peppers to disguise the taste. Chicken dishes tend to get served with the head as well :(

Anyone else had dodgy food experiences in China?

Care, it all tasted amazing:

The best Chinese food we had all holiday was in Xi'an and it cost less than a Maccy Ds meal!

ive found that no matter what i eat in china, its usually out of me before the meal ends so it doesnt really matter anyway.

This makes me nervous when I plan my world trip. Did you eat that stuff from the food stalls or...?

street food as it's more commonly known as, has been some of the best food I've eaten when travelling last year.

The only problem is, you're not always entirely sure what you're getting. And as for sanitisation? Forget it :p :D

At least with street food you see it being cooked so can make a judgement as to the hygiene. Only rules I've generally had when travelling are to eat freshly cooked and eat where it's busy with locals.
.
Weeks eating street food in Thailand and I didn't get I'll once (possibly luck, but I don't have an iron stomach by any means).

Best not ask for chicken with cream of sum yung gai

Can't say much about China, the wife has been numerous times on though, but I have visited and spent significant time in Taiwan (ROC). I have eaten loads of different things that would make most brits I know want to throw up just looking at it or smelling it so its nice seeing all the people who are responding to this thread most favourably.

As someone has already said, eat where the locals eat en masse and make sure it's freshly cooked as most are. You really can't go wrong that way. Just be adventurous, people in this country did not used to mind animal heads being on the food they ate.

I know lol, I can easily get bad stomach from eating certain meats. Some of it looks good but I've had a few bad runnings eating street food and restaurants in the past aboard. Didn't have a problem eating stuff when I was in Japan last week. If I eat veggy stuff then I'm fine.......noodles all the way!!

I'm sure I ate something that wasn't as advertised during my travels around China....but it was all delicious and I didn't get sick/squits even once! I never actually tried rat or dog when they were listed in the menu. I also tried to avoid anything listed as "meat", which is supposed to mean it's pork....but I wasn't taking any chances :D
