Forgive my ignorance folks, my sata ssd has just died a slow death after a good 10 years or so of use. Wanted to get a new one here but suddenly I see ssd's that look like sticks of ram. New one to me. M.2 ssd I see they are called and faster than sata based models?

Anywho, I have an Asus Z170 PRO GAMING mainboard:

(12) M.2 Socket 3, PCIe x4 mode (Gen 3.0)

12 is an M.2 socket, so my question is can I just pick any M.2 ssd from OC's shelves and it'll work?

Thanks for your time :)

Nvme not worth it if your just gaming , not at the costs to be honest . Great if your doing heavy video or photo work though :)

Best update your bios to but should be fine to boot off :)

You also get m.2 in sata3 form as well as the fancy nvme

Unless the board supports m.2 nvme and you buy an nvme drive, M.2 is no better than a regular sata Ssd.

Also as above, for general use you'll never notice the difference anyway. It is neater though I suppose.

Thanks fellas. I intend getting it because its a tidier option though from the bit of digging I've done it appears the mainboard does support nvme too, so I may as well get one?

It is however going to be just for general use/heavy gaming.

In that case it might not be worth the extra cost of an nvme m.2 over a regular one, that said they are faster in synthetic bench tests so it's really up to you if you think the price is worth it..

Games might load a second or two faster for example but it's nothing to get exited about unless as orbital said above, you're doing heavy sustained read/write workloads associated with photo /video editing or other specific tasks.

I got a NVME drive for my Z170 board and found tiddly squat difference over an SSD drive. Very much like this....

..... the only useful thing is that it filled the slot.!
