Fox- can I ask a Z4 question?
A mate of mine is looking to buy a 3.0 Z4 Auto, he went to look at it today and the roof wouldn't go down, the owner says the car has a temp sensor that stops the roof being operated in low temps. Have you heard of this or does it sound like a story to cover a faulty roof?
He asked some people on a Z4 forum and they hadn't heard of it, but he spoke to the local dealer and they said it was true.

I had mine down when it was snowing last year at night so it must have been bitterly cold
then.
There is no temp sensor on it's far as I know, when the roof motor is on it's way out due to water damage, it normally an intermittent problem. Mine would go weeks without there being a problem then on the odd day it would just refuse to work.
Sounds like he was hoping that it'd be a good day for the roof and it would open for him.

I investigated further with BMW dealer in Edinburgh and they say there is a sensor that stops it operating at less than 3 deg, so maybe this guy was telling the truth. Interesting.

It sounds feasible - I had my Z4 for 2 years and I did have the roof down in the cold/sun like today but I can't for the life of me remember if it was below 3 degrees or not. You'd think in this country which is now below 3 degrees from october until march and requires winter tyres we'd have noticed these kind of things!

Can't imagine it being more than 3 degrees there. It was freezing and the roads were covered in snow.
Whilst the manual suggests not lowering the roof at low temperatures (<5C) for risk of damage I also have had it down at near zero temperatures in the past.
The fault/problem is either probably a faulty switch for the boot expansion area, there are two knobs you can turn in the boot to give a bit more space. This stops the roof from operating however the microswitch can go wrong, try moving the expansion thingy up and down a few times and see if the roof starts working.
Either that or the motors toast.
