z5500's or custom?

Hmmm good question and I have never tried that as my surround system became so good, I am using it in the lounge with the tv.

I'm not up on the quality of the hdmi output on the gpu compared to your optical out. I suspect they are both just unprocessed digital streams but somebody more knowledgeable will come along and put me right ;)

Yep, well it depends, I have the HT Omega Striker 7.1 Soundcard, but the 5850 has all TrueHD and all that HDMI audio crap lol.

I don't mind using the optical, if the sound it produces is near enough the same.

All you can do is try them both and see which sounds best ;)

I guess so, Well either way I need to buy a new HDMI or Optical cable as I haven't got any spares in the house, but I'll try the HDMI used for the PS3 and see how it sounds.

Need some help guys..I gave hyperfi a ring and they don't have the Mordaunt Short 902i's in stock. So I'm totally stuck.

I looked at the auction on ebay and will see if I can win that but if anyone can recommend anything real good for bookshelfs and with a £100 budget it would help a lot.

Thanks.

No persoanl experience of them but here's what hifi review

If you can find some Q Acoustics 2010 for £110 or less somewhere, they appear to be better

I've always liked Wharfdale as a budget buy and I love my 8 series surround system.

At least if you got the 9.0's for £50 you can easily and cheaply add to them later to make a 5.1 matching system as reviewed here:

Perhaps pick up a cheap Diamond sub at some point with the $50 saved?

I bet you can't wait for them all to arrive!

Out of interest, what were you using for sound before? Pretty sure whatever it was, the new setup is going to blow you away!

I can see you picking up a cheap sub off the bay soon and then "oh well, I may as well have some surrounds and a centre speaker to make the most of my amp" ;)

haha it might end up happening like that.

Well currently I am using an Altec Lansing FX5051 5.1 System, it is good but I know it isn't as good as what I'll be getting.

And I have been looking for a sub but may probably buy it in a few months or so, looking at the Mordaunt Short 309i but you can't buy it anywhere and no one wants to sell theirs, so I'm just having a little browse.

Although the bookshelfs will be going on my desk, I don't think I have enough space in my room for a full blown 5.1 system, no space for rear speakers, maybe enough space for a center though.

At least that is the beauty of getting the AV receiver, you can now add to it as and when you spot a bargain of have suplus money.

I reckon you'll have a sub within 6 months though ;)

Got my AVR today, very big and well I'm stuck lol, I was planning on putting it on a shelf I have under my desk but the shelf is too small and the AVR is at a downwards tilt, I was wondering if it is ok to place it under my bed?

I know that heat needs to be released from the top but should it be ok?
