Basically my pc died, so as it was 6 years ago when I built my last pc I've been doing some reading on what's hot these days.

I'm looking at either a i5 3570K or a i7 3770K with probaby 16Gb of ram but need advice on which mobo chipset would be best.

My main use will be online fps gaming.

What the pros of one over the other.

Also are these mobos easy to overclock for someone like me that hasn't done any overclocking before or would getting an overclocked bundle be best?

Thanks guys....so simple.....just couldn't see the wood for the trees.

With regards to power supply connection have they changed? I have a Seasonic 600 W Modular power supply.....will this still be any good.?

Seasonic is a known good brand of PSU, and should be fine for the job unless you are planning on running SLI or Crossfire setups (2+ graphics cards) :)

What the consensus on this.....main reason is the 5-7 day delivery wait where as if I just get the components I can drive and pick them up today!

What would I do :-

Go and pick 'em up (I have limited paitence - when it comes to new parts :o)

Install , get it settled and then spend a good few happy hours getting it to level one overclock.

Leave it for a few days / week(s) and then try for level 2

Rinse and repeat until happy with clock v volts and heat :D

Have been tempted by a bundle but I'd miss out on the above and that unquantifiable smug feeling of ' I did that !' :D

BTW I am no expert - if I can overclock I am sure anyone can - just make sure you get the right , good clocking, board + cpu + ram.

If you do it should be straightforward.:) Plenty of help available here from those who actually do have some knowledge :)

Right.....decided to go with your advice and build it myself.....nothing better than saying I did that.

Just need to decide on which mobo. I'm never one to buy the cheapest but need to know that what I'm getting is good value.

I've had Asus and Gigabyte boards in the past, any suggestions as a starter would be appreciated.
Been reading up on the Asus P8Z77 range.

Do like Asus myself - am now running Sabertooth Z77 and I do like it.:)

Just a tad expensive :(

From what I have read the P8Z77 series are good boards and I would have probably bought one as the price/performance ratio looks better BUT at the time the sabertooth was the only viable option available. ( I was buying in a local store and was limited to their 'limited' stock.)

I personally use ASUS boards (for no other reason that I have never had a problem with them over the years), but have recently built a system for a friend using the MSI Z77 Mpower board (some more info here) for the price and spec of the board it is very good, the overclocking features are pretty straight forward with a few predefined overclock settings for the simple click n go.
