There's a head to head between the Arctic Cooling Accelero X2, Zalman VF700-Cu, and VF900-Cu using an X1800xt here:
Eek. Glad I found that review. If the number is correct, then it seems the Accelero X2 is either a step back from its predecessor or ahead of its time (since it seems to be optimised for BTX).

I found another round up which includes two cooler from Thermalrights, two from Artic Cooler, the two Zalman (VF-700 and 900) and the stock cooler on a 7800GTX. The Thermalright wins, but the Accelero X1 did very well there.

The Zalman on the other hand didn't do too well.

best air cooler was the arctic cooling NV5 silencer range for nvidia cards. the new accelero coolers are crap compared to the old ones.

Agreed, i have had mine for a year now and its still keeping my temps nice and low despite my card being overclocked to ultra speeds :) .

Apologies in advance if this is a dumb question.

I really don't like the black brick fan controller that comes with the VF900. So can the cooler be installed without this? If so will it then run at full speed?

How would noise levels compare between a VF900 running at full and the stock cooler on a 7900GT?

The brick controller is not needed, it will run at full speed without it.
A VF900 at full is a lot quieter than a stock 7900GT cooler.

You can buy 3 pin speed reduction cables, which will drop the voltage down to 7v, for example :)

Hmmmm, installed mine and load is just as high and even higher when I try overclocking.. first install on my X1900XTX and temps of 100C+ at load, second attemp with the screws as tight as humanly possible and stilll load temp when overclocked of 96C+... So far I'm considering putting the stock fan back on... thats if I can remove the ramsinks without killing the card first...

Fan at 100% also.. shocking !

The one great problem with these coolers over stock, is that they don't remove the heat from the case of your PC. I have read one review, where the case and cpu temps rose by 3 degrees. Another user reported the Accelero 2 caused a graphics card to die (it was used properly), his motherboard and cpu temps went thru the roof. These coolers should only be considered if you have very good heat removal around the pci slot area of your case. There are users popping up on forums evrywhere with this very issue. As noisy as the stock cooler is, the design itself has been well thought out, designers have taken into consideration, the heat that the GPU will produce, and made sure that a majority gets ejected. I'm sure there are circumstances where these new coolers are a lot better than stock, but not in every situation.
