Zelda BOTW - Am I missing something?

There's nothing to really get. It's an overhyped game because a lot of Nintendo fanboys dominate the conversations at many outlets, that in turn drives the conversation online towards that particular opinion of the game and then the majority repeat and reinforce the message because they don't want to appear like they don't "get it" + they're sheep + they don't want to incur the rage of the rabid fanbase either (you can see these 'gangs' for rockstar, sony, cdpr etc as well; outlets are also afraid of these groups).

It's an okay game with a sandboxy gimmick held further back by a weak platform. Don't get me wrong I understand why some people really enjoy it but its status is way oversold as this 10/10 GOTY GOTG GOAT GOMG game which it just isn't.

I don't think you understand it at all.

This is not about Nintendo fanboys (people who say that are fanboys of some kind...wait, does that make me one? lol). The reason people talk about it is because it is a great game, if it's a bad game people don't walk about it. People talk about Ocarina of Time because it is great, people don't talk about Twilight Princess or Skyward Swords the same way because they are not in the same league.

It's not about Nintendo, it's the merit of the game.

The way you structure your argument about "fanboys" attacking you if you disagree with them is really strange, but then your post is you attacking them, calling them sheep, and using words like rage and weak platform. All it is missing is the "PC Master Race" in your post.

I don't think you are better than the person you are attacking, in fact, way beneath them as you don't even know you are being a hypocrite in your post. There is no rage here btw.

It's fine to not like something that others love. If its not for you move on. Personally, I thought it was an amazing experience.

@manic111 I don't usually like open world games either as I find it all a bit of a chore. This grabbed me in a way that no other game of its type ever has. I wanted to explore every inch of it.

It was game of the decade for me tbh.

I liked that the story wasn't jammed down your throat. Too many games now have floating markers and invisible walls funneling you to the next plot point. The memories were a nice touch but there could have been more story for those that thought it was lacking. Japanese games are usually far too verbose!. More than anything, all the game mechanics were amazing! Wasn't a fan of the glass weapons, getting the master sword relieves some of that agro. It did hold you back from becoming Link Destroyer Of Worlds until the near end game.

By the end of some action RPGs, you have more money than god and invulnerability to everything

Odd thing to say. BOTW is among the best games I ever played. I wouldn't say that for any other Zelda game - even OOT didn't wow me or draw me in the way it does some people - I found it very good but not super memorable in the way that, eg, Deus Ex or even Mario 64 was from that era.

On your analysis, there's never any point in discussing whether or not a game is good, because fanboys will say yes, and everyone else will say no.

BOTW is objectively a great game. It happens to be a great game I also like a lot. Conversely, GTA V, Witcher 3, and RDR 2 (for example) are objectively great games but I don't get on with them at all - I can entirely see why people love them and what makes them so good, they're just not for me.

See I think OOT was overrated as well. I don't think anything has eclipsed LTTP in my experience as a proper Zelda game.

Totally agree about Nintendo's penchant for underpowering their hardware. Why the hell do they do it when it must save pennies in the grand scheme of things? I'm holding out to see if there is going to be a Switch Pro before seriously considering throwing money at it! :)

Lol. I am no Nintendo fanboy, my Switch has been gathering dust this year, but to call this game okay and a sandboxy gimmick? Hah!

What makes it more funny is it is coming from someone who went on about how good a game like Greedfall is. That game is no way near as good as BOTW.

For a handheld, more CPU power will eat more juice so it will mean the handheld experience will be compromised.

plus they’ve stopped the MHz game years ago, it seems like a money pit in production tbh if it doesn’t translate to sales. Both Sony and MS have different business model, in that their consoles is a loss leader, whereas Nintendo always sells their console with a profit margin. I don’t think Nintendo have large enough pockets to throw at it like Sony and MS does, making a loss on sales for games sales. Their past practices have worked and it’s still working so if you are them, why would you change? They are forming their own path rather fighting with the others in a crowded space.

People buy Nintendo for their games, games that they can’t get elsewhere, if they play well, it’ll be good enough.

It probably all read like an excuse but I’m merely stating the direction they have chosen.

I never made that claim universally, that's the difference. ;)

I'll still take Greedfall over 100 botws, personally. :P

Played every Zelda since A Link to the Past and agree with most of the sentiment that this was overhyped to the extreme.

It disappointed me as much as Wind Waker in not living up to the hype.

However, I don't know how much that has to do with expectation / being exhausted with the subject matter. if I was brand new to Zelda and this was my first outing then I may look at it with different eyes. I would still take issue with the pants story though. Nintendo really needs to evolve in this regard, it's time for voice acting. The thought of playing another in-house Ninty game where the communication is via written text, accentuated by blips and bleeps puts me right off.

BOTW was my first exposure to Zelda (always been a PS/PC gamer). I found it really quite tedious and gave up after about 5-10 hours.
Please do yourself a favour and play LTTP on an emu :)

I thought it might have happened down the line seeing as they almost-sort-of went there with Navi with the little clips in OOT. I reckon they just don't want to put the effort and budget in though - if you have to do voicing for several languages, that's not a cheap undertaking. I'm not that bothered about it being an oldschool RPG fan.

I don't think I would grumble if I hadn't of spent £50 on it.

Going to pursue it though keeping in mind some of the comments of this thread.

Need to climb somewhere, game will decide to rain for next 20m solid and nothing you can do about it.

i feel partly the reason BOTW was received so well was because it was finally a good zelda game that we've not seen for a long long long time. majora's mask imo being the last good game i wanted to play and did. windwaker may have been good though i unfortunately missed it as i didn't get a gamecube, but generally all were just poor games. twilight princess, skyward sword ffs what a bad game. botw was a huge jump in the right direction. there definitely is tones more to do to improve this style of game, story being one (why did they make ganon so unepic) and the weapon system being another (i hated how you almost feel scared to use the best weapon you have in case something super strong comes by and you need it, so keep using your mid weapons instead) and i hope to see these improvements in the next game. for me the style of game was perfect, with exploring so much fun to do, and the combat was what i want from a zelda game. I don't want them to waste time make a new engine, just improve what they have and put a proper good story with the game.

The fun comes from killing enemies in the most ridiculous way or doing silly stuff with the mechanics. Find a boulder. Whack it with that status kinda skill to power it up. Jump on top of it, launch yourself across the map and die in a beaten wreck on the floor lol.

Been a long time since I played it but some stuff is genius.

I have to admit about being so excited to finally play BOTW - then being a bit taken a back "so this is it" - I only got 2 hours in before I trundled off to Mario. I must revisit it as I haven't given it a fair crack of the whip - glad I'm not the only one who was a little surprised - I also hate the weapon maintenance
