Zen Internet (Price for Life)

When I move to FTTP the landline will be gone. If people have mobiles in the house there’s no need for a landline any more.
My housemate also insists on a landline and only uses a mobile for emergencies (it's switched off the rest of the time), even though it's way more expensive to make a call on the landline. As I have to pay for it, I did set up a SIP phone and told them to use that for making calls as it's so much cheaper, but I still can't get rid of the landline!

You just need to cancel it and tell them landlines have gone. :D

It might be easier to do when the they get rid of the current PSTN network, which IIRC is set for ~2025. Hopefully then I can just get the phone number transferred over to my SIP account. My housemate already knows that's in the offing (which they moaned about when they heard about it), so may be easier to do then. Until that point, I just have to suck it up. :)

You can already do that. I had that offer, but it cost some money so I didn't bother.

Yes, I could do it, but I'm going to leave it until the switch off date, just in case something goes wrong, then I can blame BT :p

Transferring the number costs about £30 IIRC for Sipgate.

I have to say that I have been a littel unhappy with Zen of late. They seem to have just gotten stuck in the mud. They haven't shown any innovation at all over the past few years and as someone just said the rest of the world has just caught up with them and in some cases overtaken them. They seem to have been focussed on trying to raise more money rather than improve their service. If anyone from Zen actually reads this then you need a feedback forum, better information about outages, 24/7 support, free mobile backup in the event of internet failure, and I am sure there are other options I could come up with...

Personally I'd disagree, for me they've been reliable, I can deal with all issues via e-mail (I can upgrade/downgrade/cancel services by simply firing off an e-mail and it just gets dealt with). Means I don't have to call them and sit around in phone queues, I wish other companies did the same. Their https://status.zen.co.uk/broadband/ tells me all I need to know about faults/outages. I'm on a fixed price for life deal that doesn't increase with inflation, as long as I don't change my service. Not tied into their router (well at least if I don't go with their VoIP option).

However, saying that they have removed the price for life now for new connections, so that's one minus. Having a 4G/5G backup would be useful, but you can just buy your own router/sim with that feature. Granted companies like BT can leverage the fact they have a mobile network to offer an in house solution, but it is an extra cost per month. I already have a mobile contract with unlimited data I can use as a hotspot if the connection goes down, so it would be unnecessary.

I'm happy they're not trying to innovate at the expense of their core service :p

Zen can't really dive in and offer 'free' mobile backup because unlike the providers that do this, they don't also own a mobile phone network or MVNO. These are the addons that giant providers are adding because it's more or less free for them to do so, and they can only offer fibre speeds that their wholesale providers will sell to them so it became the only way to differentiate the service (see also: in home Wi-Fi guarantees), but Zen would have to pay for every active SIM.

This is the downside of being with a smaller provider, the upshot is meant to be that you get a more personal service, but only existing customers can really vouch for whether that is still true.
