Zero and Verify a HDD?

Looking for a free program that works under windows that will write zeroes (or a pattern) to an entire drive and verify each sector, does such a thing exist?

I know it's possible under linux.

A FULL rather than a QUICK windows format will check every sector on hard drives (Plus since Vista will also writes zeroes to all data sectors)

I did not know that, how can you verify it is zeroed though?
