Just been in Leeds for the weekend. Mate drove down in his Puma. He hasn't got the best knowledge of cars as he has only been drivingfor a few months.

Anyway, due to not topping the car up with oil, he's blew a hole his engine.

It's the 1.4 Zetec S.

I understand that this is non repairable so how much roughly is he looking at for a replacement engine?

At a very rough guess, anywhere between £300-800 off ebay or from a scrapyard. Probably thousands - enough to write the car off - from a main dealer.

I'd say £3-£400 would be in the right area for a replacement, sound engine. £150 or so for an "unknown" scrapyard engine.

Hole in the block can be repaired, but probably isn't worth it. Or you could just source a replacement bottom end and keep the existing head.

That's good to know.

My uncle is sorting it for my mate anyway so he'll be shopping about a bit.

£400 sounds fine.

Just so you know, Zetec engines are getting quite hard to get ahold of. Everyone wants them for either what you want, tuning and kit cars :(

What? Even the 1.25L ones?

The Puma uses the all alloy Zetec SE, also used in the Focus and Fiesta. There are fewer of these around s/h as it's simply a newer engine, but it shouldn't be hard to get a decent s/h unit from a breakers etc. for £300-£400 depending on ge etc.

The Zetec E was used in older Fiestas, Escorts, Focus's and Mondeos. These are the ones mostly used for kits and RWD conversions and are common as muck. They can be picked up for under £100.

The 1.6 Zetecv-SE is a peach.

Decent manifolds, a snifter of porting and some bike TBs should see you pushing 180bhp for under a grand including engine.

Thinking about it. He must have really neglected the car for it to run out of oil!

yea zetecs dont tend to use oil, my 1.6 never did I beleave that is basicly the same ally bloc as the 1.4.

Still its an excuse to stick a proper engine in a chassis that deserves one! :D
