Well, raised from the dead anyway
Had this 160GB Maxtor diamondmax 9 which SMART said was dead and should be replaced, had loads of bad sectors. I figured if it were heavier it would be useful to prop the door open, but I laid my hands on this HDD Regenerator V1.51 program so ** I'll give it a try.
Well it took 2 days to run, it found some 45,000 bad sectors, and it said it 'fixed' them all. Sure enough, booting with it attached it passes the SMART init with no complaints. Did an in-depth SMART analysis using SpeedFan and it confuses the report It says the SMART record indicates it was a bad drive, but puzzlingly it's OK now.
I'm just running the Maxtor utilities boot disk now to see if I can reset the SMART record. I don't think I'll be storing anything critical on it, but if it's still OK might shove it in the kid's PC...
