Zune or iPod?

So who thought they were being clever by buying a Zune instead of an iPod?

Apparently all the 30GB ones are failing to boot.

Right, so this is a weird one: we're getting tons of reports—tons—about failing Zune 30s. Apparently, the players began freezing at about midnight last night, becoming totally unresponsive and practically useless.

The crisis has been dubbed by Zune users 'Y2K9', due to the apparently synchronized faceplantings across the country. According to tipster Michael, the Zune users experienced something like this:

Apparently, around 2:00 AM today, the Zune models either reset, or were already off. Upon when turning on, the thing loads up and... freezes with a full loading bar (as pictured above). I thought my brother was the only one with it, but then it happened to my Zune. Then I checked out the forums and it seems everyone with a 30GB HDD model has had this happen to them

This report is consistently corroborated by literally hundreds of others across the various Zune support and fan forums.

What hasn't emerged yet, largely due to the fact that MS's support lines aren't yet open for the day, is why these devices are failing. The evidence seems to point to a software glitch, but simple resets aren't providing any relief. Some reports indicate that only Zunes with the latest firmware are affected, but this hasn't yet been confirmed.

The proximity of the events to the New Year, which inspired the Y2K9 moniker, provides little more than a colorful backdrop; it's unlikely that the switching of years in the Zune's internal calendar has anything to do with the failures (besides, it hasn't even happened yet).

If not for the uniform representation of events across the internet, I'd be tempted to suspect this as a hoax, but it just doesn't look that way. The story, assuming the described problem is of the magnitude reported, will probably take a turn for the large when the majority of Zuners start waking up. Let us know about your experiences in the comments.

Enjoy your brick. :D

Well personally I can't wait for the zune shop to come to the uk. Much better than the rubbish itunes and much better pricing.

Never had a problem with Itunes, or my Ipod(s).

Have a nice green nano at the moment and can't fault Apple, The shop is well presented, easy to use and well priced.

Its the millennium bug catching up with you all :P

I'd expect the majority of users who imported Zunes did it for the 80 or 120gb versions, like I did.

Mine is perfectly fine, for reference ;p

The amount of people with Zune 30s reporting it on Zune.net looks like it's a firmware bug with 2009, as old firmwares are not affected. MS should be able to write a tool to copy a fixed firmware to them.

Has anyone with a Zune 30 on these forums been affected? This could still just be a hoax.

Have you seen the Zune forums?

Dont think its a hoax. :)

I like my new ipod touch, only thing i wish apple would sort out is the stupid insistence on making the battery so hard to replace.

Maybe they should wrap their Zunes in a towel? Worked for my Xbox.

Lol. How cool would you look with a Zune in a towel. :)

At least with a Zune you arn't left behind as soon as a new model comes out....

Rubbish. My 2G iPhone is still way more cool (and useable) than any other phone and my WhiteBook is still cool and works well.

Only some kind of obsessive Mac fanboi would have to always have the latest Mac kit. :p

I can't stand apple ****. They're made badly so you have to buy a new one every year or so! Sucks. I've never owned an ipod, but I bought a Toshiba Gigabeat F about 3-4yrs ago, and have rockbox on it, and it works like a charm. so many options, even video playback. The unit itself is indestructible and looks nice, the interface is perfect imo. the sound quality with the custom firmware too is millions of miles better than an ipod.

I loved my 20gb version so much, when it got full I bought another 60gb second hand, and it's been bulletproof since, currently is my travelling entertainment (with all simpsons episodes on, futurama, father ted etc.). I heard that the zune's hardware was built off the gigabeat, so that bodes well for lifespan and reliability. Shame they don't sell the gigabeats in the UK anymore, since all the hoi polloi bought their **** ipods.

Just thought i'd share the love.

iPhone is a different market to the Zune. I'm talking about iPods. A 5G iPod does not, and never will have the same features as an iPod Classic.

A Zune 30 has all of the features, hardware permitting, of a brand new Zune 120.

Ok i have a zune 30 got it as soon as i could in the UK
im gonna turn it on will post results lol.

My zune has not crashed once and is more reliable than my ipod touch and suffle by miles.
