Taiwan probably should be part of China anyway. It was originally and was only created by an offshoot of Chinese officials post 2nd world war.

Well, here's the thing, China is an Authoritarian Communist Republic, some people find living under that sort of rule offensive and would rather elect Politicians to make rules on their behalf. We support the latter group.

It's a bit more than that.

By making such a fuss about her visit they put the US in a tricky position, to stop her going would show weakness. Looks like they've just gone for the "it's not a presidential decision" line.

The main threat to the west is that we rely on them so much for chip production. Anything higher level is made in Taiwan rather than China due to security concerns.

Also puts China in a tricky position as Pelosi opens the door to other visitors of this nature, solidifying Taiwan's position and making future Chinese action even less acceptable. So it'll be interesting how China handles that.

The problem for China is that they can't really do anything, Taiwan is 100 miles off their coast and they don't have some massive amphibious landing force and Navy to back up an invasion. They're pretty toothless conventionally. Kind of laughable they had amphibious tanks on their beaches, what are they going to do, travel 100 miles over the sea to Taiwan with tanks unsupported?

Yep and yet again only ourselves to blame in the West, again we're relying on potentially volatile countries or regions for our essential needs.
The US and Europe is putting a lot of money into moving some semiconductor production back home but the scale of Taiwan's production capacity is huge. Taiwanese companies account for 48 per cent of the semiconductor foundry industry and as much as 61 per cent of the world's capacity to manufacture chips using 16nm production nodes or better.

Any sort of military conflict in Taiwan will make the chip shortages caused by Covid look insignificant, it would devastate the world economy.

Like half the ******* countries in the world m8, so many were established in 1945-1950.
You going to give them all back to the previous owner?
We'd get Singapore, it was after all British until we ****** off and left them to die during the war.

Don't forget all the sanctions that would be placed on China for trying to invade

Can we go back to when part of France was part of England?
Its a really rather nice place and as part of England I would be quite keen to relocate there

We could then remain British and leave the current island to the little islanders and the more open ones could move to the nice part further south ;)

A lot of the middle east maps were drawn post WW2 I believe

Worthwhile read.

I really thought the US and other heads of state would have visited Taiwan lots of times TBH. Maybe I was wrong.

IMO: Communism destroyed everything that was the heritage of China (and others). Perhaps the way it was ruled before wasn't 'exactly amazing' either.

A lot of this as to do with the semiconductor industry, which Taiwan is a leading player.

China is trying to get a monoply on all the precious metals on earth.

Unless China changes direction there is going to be a confrontation at some point. I think this Russia/Ukraine is an experiment, to see if the West can drain a country without physically fighting it. It's not really working.
