We have potentially a truly future proof 1440P & 2160P card when your running them in at least crossfire, 3-way recommended for 2160P. If your gaming at 1080P then a single card should be more than future proof for years to come even on the poorest console ports which could be using around 6GB of memory:

With an 8GB card you have no worries of running out of memory for a long time for sure, for 1080P one of these should be more than enough, a pair should be no issue at 1440P and OK for 2160P and three would be great for 4k gaming.

What are the 290x 8gb gaming like for temperatures? Also how long are these prices valid for?

One card 65-75c under load, two cards upto 85c underload. 3/4 cards will need fans at 100% and good ventilation to stay sub 90c ideally.

On this design, three cards is the maximum we recommend and the cards should have spacing between them.

Will an 850W EVGA G2 PSU with a OC'd 5820k @4.4, 16GB RAM, x2 SSD's, x1 HD, Nepton 240M AIO, and x4 additional fans run x2 of these cards in Crossfire without getting upset?

I can understand the appeal of the 970/980 for power consumption and temps but if I had a 970 and was planning to rma it due to the VRAM issue that £299 8gb 290x would be a lot more tempting than a £399+ 980.
