These are the episodes they mention in the trailer, so I guess it gives an idea of the characters and themes that will be in the new season.
1)Night of the Sentinels (2 part)
2)Enter Magneto
3)Sanctuary (2 part)
4)Descent (although this is season 5 and has bad/new animation style)
5)Graduation Day (finale)
I'm watching them in reverse order and have only 1) and 2) left to go tonight. I highly recommend watching the 4 part end of S4 "Beyond Good and Evil" which I watched as well.
I might even sneak in the 5 part "The Phoenix Saga" and the 4 part "Dark Phoenix" in preparation for the new series tomorrow

Let me know how good it'll be for someone who hasn't watched the original series (I've seen the odd episode like decades ago)
I can say with confidence you won't really know whats going on without seeing the 90s series.
Maybe I'm biased but to me it was a great show with a reasonable amount of depth, multiple multi episode story arcs and background stories for all the characters as well.
As a kids cartoon I genuinely think it was ahead of its time!
