A cracking game by all accounts. Dutch were we out of it midway through their batting and somehow turned it around and put in an almost perfect bowling display. (bar the dropped catch) opens the group up nicely now. Just need someone to take some points off India and nz now.

Surely Woakes has to be dropped after that performance, economy rate of over 10 for no wickets with the ball, then with the bat he uses up 26 balls before getting out without even getting to double-figures. Against Afghanistan.
I suppose to be fair, Sam Curran hasn't covered himself in glory either but it seems like Woakes is out of sorts.

One of the commentators, Simon Doull I think it was made the point that if you are going to switch him out it would be better to do it sooner rather than later, you don't want a new bowler coming into the side in the business end of the tournament.

Anyone who has bowled pace at any *level can see Woakes is just floating them up, hoping for swing. He will go for 8+ an over if we get to the big boys. *Durham County 18's bowler

Goodness me.

The ECB clearly want the format to die.

Virtually no preparation, a joke of a warm-up against Ireland, none of the players really playing any ODIs since 2019 (compared to Tests/Hundred/T20).

Who chooses to bowl first in those conditions, on a flat pitch? Jos is not showing himself to be any good.

Archer can't play, what is the point in bringing him. They should have spent the last 4 years trying to find somebody to replace him. **** form from Wood who seems to be awful in this format. Bairstow shouldn't be in the team. Stokes is past it. In fact most of them are.

Literally everything about this team is wrong.

When Morgan built his team around the attacking brand he had players who could play that way, and who had form. Other than Bairstow and Butler they do not have dominant ODI batters, and both of them are out of form.

South Africa play old style attritional cricket, relying on runs at the back-end, because those are the resources available. Luckily Klaasens is class and we have a gem in Jansen. At 243-5 after 36 overs we could easily have been 300 all out, but both built and then unleashed.

Butler is a decent guy and a brilliant batter, but I don't think he has the steel needed as captain. If England want to continue to try and play all out attacking batting they need to get Livingstone as captain and identify other players who can play that way. Hard calls need to be make - probably Root, Stokes, Bairstow and Malan need jettisoning and young players give license to develop.
The hard thing is balancing being loyal to your players and sticking with them during low periods, whilst also developing new talent who will replace old/out of form players. Normally the balance is never reached and mass cleanout is needed, and rebuild takes a while.

If that happens it will be the most incredible turnaround in sporting history.
Pakistan in the 1992 world cup had won 1 lost 3 and had one no result, and then had to win the last 3 group games. They were terrible up to that point. England could do similar, but at 100/5 it will take some doing.

All hope is not lost - its simple for England to qualify
  • New Zealand lose their remaining four matches and stay on eight.
  • India win three of their four games, losing only to England, while South Africa beat all teams except India. Then, India (16) and South Africa (14) will take the top two spots.
  • Australia beat New Zealand but lose their other matches, while Afghanistan beat Netherlands and Australia. Then both Australia and Afghanistan will finish on eight.
  • Sri Lanka beat New Zealand and Afghanistan, while Pakistan beat Bangladesh and New Zealand. Then Sri Lanka and Pakistan will finish on eight too.
  • England's 10 points will be enough for third place in this scenario, with five teams on eight fighting for the fourth spot.

Assuming we get officially knocked out in the next couple of days they are going to still have about 2 weeks left at the tournament (11th November is our final group game). That's a kind of weird scenario you don't see in the world cup of many sports, halfway round the world in a different culture with nothing to play for, but you can't go home for another two weeks and a bunch of dead rubbers (from your perspective at least) remaining. I mean take football, worst case scenario at a major tournament you get a max of 1 meaningless game and perhaps 4-5 days before you can catch a flight home, not 4 games over a fortnight. Do you try and restore pride? Experiment with different selection? Give opportunities and tournament experience to young players? Tell underperformers they need to redeem themselves or become castoffs?
