Everyone I know who owns a 7970 has overclocked it. Nearly all will overclock by a minimum of 100mhz, almost all will overclock by 200mhz, beating out a 580 by upto 50%.
The ref 7970 is very much an underclocked card at stock, yet still is light years ahead in terms of tessellation and power consumption, and when overclocked is simply in another league.
When Nvidia finally release their 28nm product, expect to see non reference 7970's running crazy clocks go on sale to counter Nvidia, with the possibility of a 2308 core 7980.
