From the sounds of it there a real possibility that residents will never be able to reoccupy the town, so its probably a bit bittersweet for the residents. Some geologists are suggesting this could be the start of a long term volcanic phase in that region with talk of possible decades, even centuries of activity there.
Could just as easily be done now, but from what they are suggesting the area is still very much active and more fissures are expected in the near future.

Bit of a nightmare situation with the worker who fell into one of the cracks, horrible way to go! But the repairs they were trying to perform did sound horrendously dangerous, especially in that unstable area!

It's actually a joke amongst the natives.. the blue lagoon should be blue.. but it's more sea green.. the other smaller lakes around are truly blue but they don't allow humans to bathe in those..
I always found the Blue Lagoon funny because it's literally the waste water from the geothermal plant nearby, but fair play to Icelandic genious in turning it into a massive cashcow for them!
