Hi, i have a spec with a:-

Core 2 duo E2180
Gigabyte P35 DS3 with DDR2 and DDR3
and 2 gig of corsair ram

I am just wondering whether this is the best route as i want to keep it as cheap as possible. At this price if i am not going to be overclocking (I wouldnt have a clue and i am not too fussed about games and benchmarks etc).

So at this price point would AMD offer a similar sort of performance in some games and general speed using windows.

For the same sort of money then the fastest AMD CPU that you can fit in should offer at least equivalent performance at stock. With overclocking the Intel would probably pull ahead but something like this ought to be around the same price and be as fast or faster at stock speeds. :)

you only need ddr2 ram not 3. If you are NOT going to overclock and never will then the AMD.
Most ppl on here will tell you to get the Intel and OC it though.

Im just not sure about what to do. Could you spec the cheapest possible ram, mobo, and cpu that i could get from intel that would be as fast as the amd at stock. Then maybe i will try overclocking later.

If you wish to overclock then you cant just buy the cheapest mobo as it wont overclock very well if at all.

You can get a 1.8ghz intel to run near 3ghz with overclocking i beleive.
