Randomly exciting thing for me that maybe half a dozen people will 'get'

And you wonder why people don't take you seriously.

So you think that changing your appearance from as nature intended in one way is absolutely fine but changing it in another way is mutilation?

Interesting...

...do you ever shave?

Rofl, I don't see anywhere in this thread that Platypus has mentioned anything to do with mutilation.

Way to over react :p

tbh i couldnt give a monkeys if anyone likes my tattoos, they are mine, and i like them

the scarification does look awesome, but something i doubt id have done

there is a place in sheffield that does scarification, and im sure they do amputations too, called Van Schaicks, they dont seem to have a homepage or anything apart form a myspace page though

Mis-read from scrolling too fast. :)

But it is a pertinent point; if one takes the stance that tattoos, scars and piercings are mutilation then surely any change from 'as nature intended' is mutilation...

I hadn't mentioned anything about mutilation, tattooing, scarring or piercings.

However, to liken these things to having your haircut is stupidity beyond belief.

I see what your saying, I think people just see it as not normal, where as shaving has become normal.

Who knows maybe in 50 years everyone will have a mushroom in their baps :)

So Penski, having exhausted your search for rusted out bangers, you're going to BECOME a rusted out banger.

Damn, that's some serious dedication to the cause! :p

Not exactly the same thing though - tattoos, scarring and microdermals or piercing (to a lesser extent for the last two perhaps) are pretty permanant. A haircut or shaving isn't unless you are horrendously careless so while strictly speaking you could call it mutilation it is in an entirely different league, in fact I'm not even sure it is the same sport. :)

Shaving (and to a lesser extent cutting of the hair) changes the hair follicles and the manner in which the hair grows. It creates a permenant change to the body.

Likewise dying hair, using products on your hair, straightening it or even using a hair drier can permenantly alter the hair and it's properties.

You are right when you say that it is a question of scale but I'm not quite so convinced by the levels here. Hair will normally grow back and look no different to before but scarification, tattoos etc mean that you see a permenant and noticeable change (if you don't then that raises the question of if it is worth it) your body simply cannot repair the 'damage' done sufficiently for it not to be permenant although it may try or otherwise take steps to minimise the further damage hence the rejection of piercings or earlobes breaking if stretched too far too quickly. This is all a bit like teaching your granny to suck eggs though, you know this anyway so I'll stop there.

As I see it we all draw a line about what we find to be acceptable changes to our body and to a lesser extent those of others, some people just draw that line a little bit further into what you might term the extreme. :)

 Ummm I'm not quite sure what to think about that, and anyway tats can be removed now without scaring (anyone see that thing with the chemicals on dragons den?) and in a few years (well within this lifetime) cloned skin or just a sample of your own skin grown will probably be easy and common so scarings wouldn't be a problem. Less and less of this sort of thing is "permanent" now, just depends how much your willing to py the ma with the scalpel.

Still we want pictures when its done, and perhaps a video of you crying like a little girl when its done ;):p:D

If they are who I am thinking of, they don't have a good reputation at all...

Besides, nobody who does amputations advertises them.

I didn't flinch when I had a scalpel taken to my bits...I doubt I'd cry from some MDs...
