Thats the first time I've ever heard Alpina described as having a chav image - they are aimed as the discerning gentlemens alternative to an M3, M5 or what have you. This is why the majority of them are automatic and based on the SE model of the car in question and not the Sport.
 
Whether or not it is perhaps a sensible idea doesnt change the fact that Alpina DOES have a chavvy image - whether its intended or not is irrelevent.

Perhaps chavvy is the wrong word, but they certainly have a dodgy image about them.
 
According to this forum, everything you care to mention has a chavvy image these days. It's as if people have lost sight of what a chav is so brand everything chav. I bet somebody would try and say Ferrari have a chavvy image given half a chance.

I must see perhaps 1 genuine Alpina car every month or two, even if you live in London they are not on every street corner becuase they are all very limited production run. How can you see enough to form an opinion that they are for chavs? A large number of them are also very plain looking (Like I said, SE based, NOT Sport) large saloons and estate cars. Just the thing for the burberry brigade then..

Where do chavs get 5 figure sums to buy, insure and run limited edition 3.3-4.8 litre BMW's?

Down here chavs hang around bus stops smoking tabs dreaming of the day they can nick a Metro.
 
I dont see a lot of alpina's which are likely genuine, but i do see a lot of cars with Alpina badging - to the general public fake or real, they all look like modded BMW's.

I would agree that chav is perhaps the wrong word to describe them, but all the same the image is not good at all. Not sure even i could live with it, and i would be described as dodgy by some.
 
Chap up the road has an A4 cabrio, as if a 4 seater vert wasn't bad enough, its a diesel too. I think he is mad tbh. But yes, it does have a better 'image' than a modded BMW.
 
alpina for the win although do seem a favourite with the drugdealers(got 2 in my street) alpinas that is (drug dealers are every second house
