Just bought a PS3, First impressions from a high end pc gamer

I recommend setting up PS3 media streaming since unlike MS's POS media system it works with everything including any WiFi phone/device. Its very cool to stream stuff of your Nokia phone to show people pictures, movies you took. :)

Sign up for PSN. Get Warhawk!!! best multiplayer game on consoles. Its like a console 3rd person Battlefield but quite unique as to not be a clone. a lot more flying than Bf and nothign like the other BF clones. Very addictive. IMO best PS3 game. Resistance is nice but not as good as this, plus i prefer fps on a pc so Warhawk is perfect for people like us.

Also start renting Blu Rays and games online. 1080p Blu Rays are godly.

Cd's are ripped to Ps3 and it checks for album art labels online automatically.

Make sure you have HDMI 1.3 options turned on. Like deep white and the colour setting. Most people dont actually have tv's that support these but check and see what your tv has in order to maximise Picture quality :) You get more vibrant colours, better blacks etc.

Maximise PSN. Get a US account as well. They have loads more content than us. I am playing the Stranglehold demo for example. Buy some of the games like Tekken. Tekken 5 DR is awesome. Its not a hardcore fighting game but its a lot of fun.

Hard to get bored with the PS3 since it does so many things.

Free online was reason to choose ps3 over 360, having said that none of my friends have either a 360 or PS3 so i wont be playing with anyone online. moot point tbh.

Yes i could have bought a blue ray drive for PC for £150 but its well accepted that PS3s blue ray player is one of the best on the market.

Also theres on way to get 7.1 LCPM out of a pc jihad ( not that i need that).

Pcs are an effort to geek and i wont be the only one in the house using this.

Have you tried a PS3 as a media device? Pc's quite frankly suck in comparison. PS3 just does everything effortlessly out of the box and elegantly. We need more work to be done. Hopefully things improve for htpcs.

HDMI 1.3 is a newer thing. a lot of the options are auto anyway which checks against your tv. Some tv sadly have the feature but dont tell the PS3 or blu Ray players due to design issues. These are rare with new tv's now but they used to be an issue.

Yup get a US location off google. Make sure your main account is your main address. Sony sometimes use that to send stuff like Casino Royale Blu Ray or demos.

While you are at it you can also get a Hong Kong account :) Its english.

Well motorstorm is nice,

I'm still getting my around it.

Its not match for a pc but it will do as a secondary device.

Not many people can afford a media center pc and PS3 but thats too bad for them then. btw PS3 will not beat Vista MCE for media, i have both now, and i know what i'm talking about. 360 doesn't come close either for the note.

Still need to have a play with it.

so what did you actually buy it for if not as a gaming device and not as a media centre? not questioning you its just most people that dont buy it for gaming have bought it as a media device.

Occasional gaming when friends are around, looking cool, occasional blue ray use , occasional online bash, possible linux installation device ;)

ignore jihad, all he does is moan about the PS3, he doesnt have much else to do.
The ps3 is an excellent media machine, and although people moan about the games, the 360 only has 2 killer titles and its been out 2 years.If you look past the larger games catalogue, the 360 is a pretty shocking bit of kit - sure its cheaper but that is reflected in the 33% failure rate
Anyways, back on topic, the PSN isnt usually too slow, but it is admittedly slower than live
 
I agree totally i have the same ,i use it mostly for the blue ray side but motostorm is really classy the intro is amazing lol and the future of the ps3 looks good ie resident evil 5

Yeah my fault guys, i apologise, looks like mods are on leave today or something lol.

BTW I don't think PS3 is that great a media center device, its definately bettered by the PC by a long shot, 360 isn't much better either.

The way I see it now.

For reference level gaming - pc
people you can't afford above - 360
occasional use + blue ray and generally everything eelse - PS3 (if you can't afford it get a 360 again i suppose)
if you are <5 year old - Wii

Those are my opinions so don't bothered questioning them

time to check if PS3 demos are leeched.

It had nothing to do with the fact it was a PS3, what I said is true, not my problem you can't face it.

PC sucks? Hmm..

How many formats can the PS3 play again? Can it upscale over VGA? Can you customize the crap out of the image quality like you can with FFDShow? ;)

The PS3 and 360 both suck as media machines if you haven't got a PC to support it, I'll however stick to using my PC, it's superior to my 360 for all things media and it was superior back when I had my PS3.

It's ironic how you can say a PC sucks in comparison to a PS3 as a media center when the PS3 NEEDS a PC to even function as one.
