Mclaren might be in the poo big time [ANCIENT THREAD REVIVAL]

Doesn't suck like BTCC does, with their sucess balast, cars on a different set of rules, and wheel of fortune to choose the grid.

Indeed. Of all the most contrived, pointless rules systems in motorsport the BTCC has to take pride of place. Which is a shame, as it used to be so damned good.

In fact, you start to run out of well-run series with sensible rule books at the high-end if you cast about. US open wheel stuff is run by complete *****. NASCAR (much as I adore it) has a rather silly points system these days with the so-called "Chase For The Nextel Cup" - basically turns it into a play-off system for the final rounds that only involves the top 12 drivers (was 10). GP2 is a spec series, so doesn't count (it's also a rubbish spectacle when they aren't creating obscene accidents). A1GP has the horribly contrived Power Boost Overtaking Button Of Great And Glorious Justice™ (and I can say that happily as I worked on some of the design stuff involved in the current iteration of those engines!). WRC is....well....just plain rubbish, and has been for some time now.

Yeah what on earth is that wheel thing all about! So tacky :( I remember the good old days of BTCC with Pugs, Nissan, Ford etc :D

I think the BTCC works really well. If you want contrived rules that are always changing try WTCC - their ballast system is far more punishing than the BTCC and they have different base weights for individual cars which they change during the season! I stopped watching it after the Supertouring era but it is starting to get back to what it once was.

The success ballast tends to affect qualifying more than anything else and stops the championship leader qualifying on pole and driving away to lights to flag victories every meeting.

The S2000/BTC construction regs are a transitional thing and in reality the cars are so closely matched (BTC cars run a bit heavier) it doesn't really affect the racing to any great degree, the only thing is you now cannot win the drivers championship in a BTC spec car which was never going to happen anyway.

The wheel thing is tacky I agree. It was better when they used cards, but its just to randomise the reverse grid after people starting trying to finish 10th in the second race to be on pole for the third - now anyone from 6th to 10th could get pole.

Yea, the Nissan days were the last of the good BTCC races. With Matt Neil in the Private Nissan taking a good quantity of points.

Then the was the 4x4 audi's for a year.

I have the highlights of the 1994 season on tape. :D My fav year.

can't beat the old rs500, i had the 1990 season on video and sold it for £20

Harsh as it is, if it is found that McLaren knew information about Ferrari and acted on it (which they must have done if their drivers knew about it), then they should definitely face a ban for this season (ie score 0 points). If not, it will set a crazy precedent for years to come, where teams can cheat with little/no fear of a big punishment coming their way. Plus the fact that they will have blatantly lied to the FIA when this issue was raised previously if these allegations prove to be true.

Its sad, but they will have to be punished like this if they are found guilty or the future of the sport will be a joke.

Ill second that. And guess what every other team that moved from Michelins to Bridgestone in 2007 are nowhere in the running, including the same Renault team that produced 2 WC winning cars. Mclaren pushed the envelope too far this time and got caught - a ban for 2007 would definitely be justice.

i see the words 'cheat' and 'stole' thrown around a lot by ferrari fanboys but how true are they?

in what way have mclaren cheated? how did they steal when the documents were given to them by ferrari (or at least a member of staff)?

just a pointless witchhunt ruining a good season imho.

way i see it is, a ferrari employee took the documents etc, if anyone should be fined it should be him, not the people he took it to.

Being in possession of Ferrari tech data wasn't the problem, I suspect. The problem was McLaren saying "oh well, only Mike Coughlan actually had it. None of the team ever saw it". Which has possibly turned out to be a complete lie, given recent revelations.

At any rate - by all means, spy on your rivals. Accept documents from their employees and send them around your factory. Hell, break into their garage and photograph their car in minute detail.

Just don't bloody well get caught doing it!!!

That's the truly brainless part of this whole thing - not that McLaren ended up in possession of Ferrari tech data, but that they (or at least, an employee of theirs) were caught with the damned files! This is the 'Keystone Cops' school of espionage....

Problem is that they may have acted on the data they received. All will become clear on Thursday. Needless to say it'll give Dennis another opportunity to moan about something ;).

BTCC was ruined for me when they allowed the Integras to race. If you want to run a car in BTCC at least make sure its officially on sale in Britain by the manufacturer, not through the import only route.

and yes I really do like the DC5 and FD2, damn you Honda UK ;)

Thursday by the looks of it will be a huge day of outcomes.

Is the 'new' evidence about this story something to do with these emails going aroud the McLaren drivers by any chance?

I havnt really read the whole story about this.

I actually thought this whole thing was pretty much over. There were a hearing, McLaren were found not guilty, using the data to make thier car 'faster' than the Ferrari. They did get the no points scoring though in the Hungarain race.

I thought they would have moved on but I guess not. I hate this whole story as the focus pretty much these days is on this story and not the racing. We have a great championship that could go pretty much 4 ways. Maybe just 3 now, unless Massa gets some unbelievable luck in the remaining 4 races.

If McLaren are found guilty, surely they wont be banned from this season's competition?

That in my view would a huge disappointment for the sport and for the fans.

So, let me try and get it this right.

McLaren found guilty of using the Ferrari 'data' to improve thier cars, they will be banned for 2 seasons? This one and next years?

They wont be banned at all, it just wont happen(and if it does il eat me hat) what kind of season will it be for the next year or two ?

I think ferrari at the moment are characterless, before they had brawn and that who would talk to the cameras, who does it now? least Ron shows heart and sheds a tear.
