Happy Birthday to the most underrated console

Yep, agreed, it was technically a great console... just a shame that it wasn't deemed "as cool" as the PS2. It deserved to have had much more success than it had.

it's flop is probably more due to the most weak copy protection system in th history of video games than anything else. Which IMO is highly ironic because the people i know IRL who have one and rave about them only play copied games.

That wasnt the reason it flopped to be honest..
It just wasnt as well received as PS2 was etc..
Its much easier to find the copied games than the legit ones i find too.
Shame really. Its a great party console, i dont think the wii even matches it yet.

Is the Dreamcast underrated?

Ok, so it didn't sell anywhere as well as it should have, but for the most part the gaming community appreciated it.

It had the most 60fps games too - you really felt like you were getting a slick, smooth experience from it. Games like Crazy Taxi, Zombie Revenge, House of the Dead and Soul Calibur really blew you away.

There has never been an evolution like the Dreamcast. I went from weedy PS1 games to this monster of a powerhouse. You try going from Tekken 3 to Soul Calibur. You seriously won't find such a leap anywhere else. It's like God imbued Sega with the essence of knowledge only for the Devil to imbue Sony with the mantra of lies and deception, with their PS2 that led to the Dreamcast's downfall.

Zelda Alttp -> Zelda OoT and Super Mario World -> Mario 64 appear to contradict you :p

I don't think the Dreamcast is underrated, I know loads of people who all rank it as their favourite console ever.

Unfortunately it was killed off due to people waiting for the Playstation 2 :(.

It was a brilliant console - i had mine before they were sold in the UK!

Me mates dad built the dreamcast pods which you can play them on, so i got one of him. :D

Crazy taxi, power stone, blue stinger, wwf attitude (with 3 mates lol) , virtua tennis, jet set radio, sonic adventures and house of the dead 2 are just a few of the awesome games it had - tis a shame. :(

Was definately a fan of the Dreamcast and still have mine somewhere about the place. It really was a shame that the console wasnt as successful as it should have been. Some of the games were just superb, F355 Challenge, Metropolis Street Racer and ShenMue were my favourites, along with Quake3 which worked shockingly well with the dc controller and 33.6k modem :).

The vmu was fantastic. remember all tamagotchi stuff with Sonic Adventure. Loved 4 player toy commander too. Had a lot of features ahead of it's time. Shame Sega didn't have the cash to push it. One of the best resident evil games too ^_^.

i brought my dreamcast on import, orange labeled box, my mate took me to a import store up near London and i paid £400 for it, lol, mad, but yes a great console

I did the same, and then another £300+ on a new TV just so it played in colour :o

Great console.

This brings back memories. 8 Years ago yesterday I was taking the bus into town to pick up my new Dreamcast, VMU, extra controller and Sonic Adventure :)
Time flies......but I can honestly say that the Dreamcast was the most fun I've had playing console games. Powerstone, Crazy Taxi and Soul Calibur to name a few.
I've prob missed out big time though, because I never picked up Shenmue!?

It was never underrated, it just didn't sell for a variety of reasons, some of which were out of Sega's control.

But yes, a great console. The first time I saw Code Veronica running on my Japanese friend's import machine, I was literally stunned.

Brilliant games, but those were still ugly jaggy games with poor frame rates.

Jaggy yes, though I wouldn't agree with ugly. Anyway, I agree with Kreeeee in that the leap from 2D to 3D for those games (along with GTA2 to GTA3) is massively bigger than the leap from 3D to, erm, smoother, shinier 3D for Tekkon to Soul Calibur.
