Best selling video games ever

Sorry I rate the games in the list much higher than the ones you list. Not to say the ones you mention aren't good. I'd say the reason the ones I mentioned sold so well is because they are ultimate classics not because they are commercial.

The Sims is certainly not an 'ultimate classic'.

We wont see game sales like that again, no thanks to piracy,

I think less people pirate these days and the games market has grown substantially then back then. It's just the range and diversity of games has increased and so theres more competition for your money.

nah i dont think so. the proliferation of cheat devices where you can simply download game roms is at an all time high.

you dont even need to hardware mod things like PS2's any more to play games so its kinda understandable that piracy has dented sales

but how much compared to game rental?

Not by our standards but in a lot of peoples eyes it must be. I bet a lot of Sims people would look at Half Life in disgust making the list!

Oh, there's no question that's the case - completely agree. But anyone who does deem The Sims with such status is probably unable to judge and discuss games in any sort of depth and with any real, genuine interest in games. Just can't see it. However, if I've insulted any Sims fans I do apologise :D (not)

Who's to say that pokemon isn't one of the best games ever? My mates kids and they absolutely adore them. The same is true of the Sims. They may not be 'gamers' games, but to entertain that many people they're certainly great.

Don't take it too seriously. :p If people want to enjoy that game they should do what makes them feel good. It's not for me but I can't deny the people behind it are doing something right there.

I'm chilled man ;)

Most of us here are in the minority, heading dangerously into nerd territory, of gamers. I remember some film student at Uni criticising me because I love Indiana Jones but hadn't seen some black and white polish flick he was studying. That's what I think of everytime somene bashes The Sims and then goes gaga over something like HL2.

Glad to see FF VII in there, one of the best RPG games made IMO. Also good to see Starcraft in there, that was an amazing game, shame to see Command and Conquer isn't there, but it is in the top 20 franchises.

Only people who've evolved an extra finger on each hand and can look in different directions with each eye still play Starcraft. The weak have been culled, you need to be a cyborg to compete!

What I don't understand from that is why isn't WOW in the top franchises? Surely out of all the games there it still makes the most money due to the $10 sub every month? Or do they not count towards it?

StarCraft is still by far the best.... It's an amazing game and I really hope SC2 can match it.

Of course it can....and why.... because it is just the same game, but with new graphics and to be honest they haven't even changed the graphics much either.

I am in no doubt Starcraft is a very popular game and offers a very good balance (of which a lot of games could learn), but really it could improve in a lot of areas. The trouble Blizzard have is that they fear to change it because of its award winning format.

If the fans dont accept it as StarCrafts natural predecessor then they can kiss there beloved franchise away.

and dont insult my SupCom as it is by FAR and away NOT boring.
Sure a lot of the features need improvement, but it has such greatness about it and the battles are truly immense.

Like The Sims and its billion add ons? lets face it, its the same with all media, films, music, the top selling aren't the best

I've never actualy played the sims so can't comment. If you like at my OP you'll see that I said the games I list are the ultimate classics or what I consider to be the ultimate classics:-

The ones I mentioned:-

SMB 3, Super Mario 64, Goldeneye, Half Life, GTA Series. If they aren't some of the, if not the best games ever made I don't know what are.
