Hi guys,

I've been thinking about getting a cheap car primarily for track use. I was curious if anyone does this as a hobbie? I've been thinking of a Clio 16v but the only problem I can see is just cost (in terms of insurance, especially as I've only got 1 NCB + crappy post code). Also, how much on average is a day on the tracks?

Its definately not a cheap hobby, average track days are around £150, thats sometimes only for 1 session.

If you're worried about the cost of insurance for a track car, then think about the running costs of a track car!

It's very expensive - as above you're looking at a fair bit over £100 just to get onto the track, then there's fuel, tyres, brake pads/discs which you will munch through. Other mechanical damage to worry about, and of course crash damage repairs.

I would love to get a track car, but the associated costs are enormous.

Indeed, I've thought about it many a time but it's very expensive.

It's a bit better if you're handy with a spanner as you will be able to replace things on it cheaply.

I've always maintained that if you're going to have a track car, take a little care building it to certain regs and you are then eligible to run in Sprints and Hillclimbs - real competition, often no more expensive (or cheaper) plus you use the car for short bursts so less chance of oil surge knackering the bottom end after a lengthy track session.

Something to bear in mind anyway :)

I couldn't agree more.
Competing is one thing, but just prepping a car to do the odd few laps here and there isn't worth the costs involed IMHO.

i dont really think its that expensive.
got my 4th track day this year on sunday.

track time £150-£200
insurance for the day £50
fuel £60 (+ the fuel to get there/home)

then there's wear to tyres and brakes and more frequent oil changes but the costs depend on your car.

while hillclimbing may be good fun if i wanted competition it would have to be proper circuit racing so that puts the costs way above track days

Boo. :(

Well, I drive a Punto JTD which is good for what it is. But I fancy something with a bit of power for the weekends. The only problem is insurance. I'd really like a Fiat Coupe 20VT. :(

So probably around £400 a time including tyres. If this is the fourth this year that will be £1600.

Me and dad are going to prep his rover 200 for track use but we will use it primarily for hill climbs and maybe some tarmac rallies. What i would say to you is instead of buying a track car, buy an everyday motor which is fast and fun so when you fancy doing a track day you can dive in your daily and have a fun day out. As you say you want a fiat 20vt which is practical and fun-ideal for an everyday that can be used for some track fun.

Have to say that I'm considering kart racing when my bank account has stabilised. Probably one of the best fun/£ options out there.
