Blu-Ray' are not very clear on my PS3 :(

You would have thought that anything on HD would be perfect. Is n't that the point of HD after all?

Like mmj_uk, said HD is just the resolution. However, the colours tend to be richers, the blacks blacker, the picture far sharper and more detailed. You get a far better 'looking through a window' experience. It's painful going back to standard def once used to HD.

Guys...! I believe it's the blu-ray's to blame!

Here's a review of 'Hitch' (The blu-ray I tried)

Quote:

The source print, while clean from major defects, does exhibit what looks like fine film grain throughout. Though this would be perfectly fine, upon closer inspection there is some noise clearly visible, with the film's many daytime exteriors look a bit fuzzy and blocky in the skies and other solid patches of color

That's what we've been saying ;)

Check out Planet Earth if you get a chance. It's an excellent boxset - but also, as it uses various different cameras in virtually every possible situation/environment, shows clearly how much Blu-ray can vary. In one scene you're looking through crystal clear water and can pick out the scales on a fish, in another there's some grain and it blurs.

You'll find it's on many many films though, even very new ones like the LOTR series. Find your ROTK dvd if you have it and find the scene where Frodo and Gollum reach Shelobs cave (the spider) and there's a zoom in on the cave before they go in the first time you see it - the level of noise on that zoom is shocking.

It's partly just the limited resolution of film not being able to smoothly capture certain effect, especially atmostpheric effects, plus digital compression (even on HD there isn't enough bandwidth for a really satisfactory picture IMO) just makes it look worse. People don't realize digital has largely been a step backwards in quality.

Here we go - noisy and compressed and it's 100 times worse in motion-

This is from a 1080p HD clip btw.

The amount of noise in the initial scene where Bond claims his first ever kill is ridiculous.

I reckon that was intentional as it was black and white and was supposed to show something that happened in the past. The rest of the transfer is very good I thought. Bits that stood out is when he is chasing the guy and they jump between cranes. And also towards the end when they do some panning shots of some big structure in Venice.

Its the same as when old TV series' got released on DVD, but used the VHS material ... it's not necassarily higher quality, depends if they want to go to the expense of using the original source, or the ready to go DVD.

Buy The Fifth Element if you want an example of how good HD can look, plus it's a great movie too :)

Make sure you get the new remastered version, the original BluRay release was awful.

Also if you can get hold of one on the Pirates movies as these have a showcase section in the menus to show you what the see as rthe best sections to show off picture quality.

Apocalypto looks stunning. I did notice a fair bit of grain in the opening scene in the forest, but nothing that detracted from the experience. Soon after I didn't notice anymore and was pretty much gobsmacked at how good it looked.
