Well! apart from the "vista supported" installation CD not working in Vista (reports "no NIC could be found, arf) I managed to install it off an XP pc and with the modem connected to the WRT54GL (it registered the Router's MAC so no need to clone a pcs MAC addy ;))

Here's what I am getting (tests done on http://www.thinkbroadband.co from my pc over wireless-g)
Date 10/09/07 13:45:10
Speed Down 15460.65 Kbps ( 15.1 Mbps )
Speed Up 722.29 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps )
Port 8095
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

And if I connect to the Sky MAX ADSL router (sky line is still active and connected at a paltry 6.4MB) I get:
Date 10/09/07 13:51:54
Speed Down 796.57 Kbps ( 0.8 Mbps )
Speed Up 642.58 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
Port 8095

Glad I made the change back to NTL/Virgin :)

You dont even need the install disks, they only ship them so you end up with a Virgin Branded IE...

Your speeds for ADSL are VERY good for ADSL - although no idea what your line attenuation is.

Im sure you will be happy with Virgin up till the point you get your first Traffic Shaping day :) I left Virgin a month after they introduced the Traffic Shaping as it was no where near the service i was used to with Telewest (been with them since they was Cableinet!) and im now on Be* ADSL2+ which is great, 19mb Down 1.3mb Upload with no caps or traffic shaping.

Which is good for me as i always hit over 500gb downloads a month

Well up until last month I was able to download at 750k/s minimum even on torrents and now I am lucky to get 500! - on top of that daily it disconnects at the source, I log onto the router and see "LCP IS DOWN" then moments later it comes back up. The same happened with a Linksys WAG200G and I did try new filters and master socket to no avail. I still have not heard back from Sky whose last response was "check your cables and filters"

I think this should be fine :)

Yes but thats more to do with Sky though :) I dreaded moving to ADSL but i've had nothing but great service from Be* and they have just launched a Value package for £14 a month with no caps or traffic shaping.

You only get 8mb download but still 1.3mb upload! Its good value if you download a lot.

I was with Cableinet/Telewest for years but soon as Virgin came into play it went down hill and the traffic shaping was the last straw.

Im glad i was forced into ADSL when i moved house earlier this year as its been great service ever since - well apart from the crap modem given but what you expect for free!

well lets hope everything is good with Virgin in this area :) - from what my workmates tell me who are also on the same exchange on 20MB they have no issues at all!

Some network cable crimping (old heads were dirty and oxidised!) and tweaking later!

You don't need to worry about what MAC address the router has configured. The cable modem will work fine with any device without having to register a MAC address against your account - you just need to power cycle it when changing devices.

Yes you do as if you're a new customer you need to create an account and if you've moved house you need to register the modem to your account. Well - you can do this by phoning in I suppose but if you're a new customer you still have to register. The modem just won't get out to the Internet otherwise as it gets a temporary config file with slow speeds which can only access the registration server.

Yup *** CD was required to run the modem configuration as it registered me as a new user to the service

Yo, how quickly did the engineer install everything? He's due today and I'm just wondering how long I'm meant to be home for.

No engineer came round as we already had NTL in the past so nothing needed mounting, just plug in cable and go!, they posted me a box with a humorous caution:

The box contains 2x Coax leads with splitters and covers as well as (what appears to be at least 10 metres of) fat CAT5 cable and of course the black modem - mighty nice package tbh.

How long is a piece of string? Depends on what you want doing (new cables laying, access points etc)

Could take from 10mins to a few hours.

Welp. The damn thing doesn't work. The ready light is on my modem and when it's wired straight into the computer via ethernet, nothing loads up. My NIC is on DHCP, everything to auto obtain. I am able to autoregister the thing, but the internet doesn't actually do anything.
