What I want to know is (and I don't think anyone has clarified this yet) how did Ferrari get hold of these alleged emails and text messages?
The police? In which case, why were they made available to the FIA, potentially scuppering any criminal proceedings that may take place for industrial espionage.
Intercepted? In which case, I hope that McLaren start criminal proceedings against Ferrari for industrial espionage. After all, if they can intercept that kind of email, what else might they have intercepted?

I surely think that the spying game goes on all the time. The teams are very connected togethter, information etc is bound to get passed acorssed.
Even teams get parts of thier car from other teams, yes maybe the seasons before equipment but its still the same. They can find out how the engine was working last season and see possible ways of how the team could have possibly improved it for the next season.

why oh why did they go ahead with the manufactures championship. They really should have ditched f1.
It the way that they recieve it. I agree Mclaren should have been punished. However if no data was used on there car, then that punishment is well OTT. we will have to wait till tomorrow.

F1 has survived the loss of Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Vanwall, Cooper, Lotus, Brabham, BRM, Matra, Ligier et al. What's one more on top of that lot?

None of which were forcefully kicked out like McLaren basically have been. For a smaller team it would be the end - they would be bankrupt. But the FIA knows McLaren has a bit of spare cash so they don't expect them to pull out completely.
No its doesnt look good on F1. Maybe the FIA though have made this into a statement, saying that they take rule breaking seriously and punshiments will be made.

If that was the case why didn't Ferrari get a bigger punishment for actual cheating, rather than just spying. If what has been reported is true.
Tyrrell were in the '80s (1984 IIRC). They weren't even allowed to run the final three races, and their drivers were DQ'd from the championship as well. They somehow survived until Jean Alesi and Harvey Postlethwaite could kick off a minor revival in '89-'90.

And I'll refer you to my example. In 1984, Tyrrell were found to have been putting lead in their fuel tank. Didn't noticeably improve the performance of the car (they were running N/A Cossies against turbo engined teams, think on), the drivers had nothing to do with it, but they still lost all their results and points for that season AND were banned from the final three races.
On that basis, McLaren got lucky....
