Stumbled across this video on 'advanced' driving techniques on Youtube:

Part 1
Part 2

Now for a simpleton like me, this is the only explanation I've ever come across where the penny has finally dropped :p

I do rev matching (first technique he discusses) anyway and I guess most people do without giving it thought, but I'm eager to try the heel-toe method now.

One thing - the double-declutching not being needed/useful with modern cars, is this true? Is there no advantage to doing this now?

Anyone do that rev match thing? I just go slow in the higher gear and change down and then bring the clutch up slowly and it doesnt jerk?

I use heal and toe a lot, and I double de-clutch when I down-shift to overtake etc.

Mostly because it sounds good, not so much in the punto tho.

I have been rev matching and heel-and-toeing lately to make driving a bit more fun, the ride is generally better, too :)

Rev matching and heel & toe are benificial/worthwhile in pretty much any manual car.

Double de clutching is not because we have invented synchromesh.

Hmm, I might have to look into these techniques... my "fast" driving on my Octy vrS isn't smooth.

I just boot it and hope for the best :p

Must look at this later. I normally just plant it and go. I tried left-foot braking once, but nearly hit the windscreen :p :D

When I learnt how to drive I was taught to rev match and more recently I have taken to to heel an toeing. I only do it when driving "quickly" but I do find it makes for much smoother braking coming up to junctions and roundabouts - I wouldnt generally bother for corners, just look ahead, rev match on a downshift and brake afterwards.
