Gaming on Laptops?????????

Hi, I just bought a Dell 1710 for the same reason as you and it plays css, battlefield 2142/2 and quake wars(demo) on pretty much full quality.

It has:
2ghz Core 2 duo
2gb ram
8600gt
160gb hdd
upgraded battery
and was £940 once I took off all the discounts.

Well worth it if your traveling about imo

Chris

Running a 'older' Dell XPS m1710 with the spec -

Core 2 7600 (2.33Ghz)
2Gb Ram
7950GTX
160Gb HDD

Can only imagine that it would play most games with a decent level of detail, however, with a native ress of 1900x1200 I'd imagine it would start to struggle on the most recent games without dropping down the ress quite significantly, not entirely sure how the screen would do at a lower resolution though as I've never tried.
Always intended to buy the laptop for mobile gaming as I tend to live at 2 different houses, turns out I end up doing most of my gaming on an Xbox 360  ... But World of Warcraft is pretty at 1900x1200 ;)

Superbly quick machine though, however I'd feel like a bit of a plumb recommending it as its never done anything more stressful than play WoW, Football Manager and an occasional 5 minutes on Sims 2.

Screen works fine at lower res for games (until you get down to 800 x 600 and then writing text looks a bit crap) I have been playing MOH Airborne and Bioshock at 1280 x 800 and it looks great.

wayhey for breaking the competitior rules!!!!

Where?

OcUK used to stock the dell range, that's where i got mine from.

Still pulls at 1920x1200 quite well in games like bioshock. :)

For gaming on the go, the m1710 is a good buy, for all out speed the alienware m7950 is a speed freak :D

It does! Jesus...what level of settings are you using. My destop Quad, GTX and 4Gb manages at 1920...but thats a lot of powere to get out a laptop. Im thinking a decent laptop may be the way to go for the moment:confused:

I think we should have a gaming laptop section on OCuk. Would be good for all things laptop related.

Any Dons fancy putting the request in?

There's not really much point though, it's the same platform/architecture/software and more or less the same hardware.

Not even close! We have a SFF section and that really is similar kit to the standard, but people have realised that it has different problems and requirements to your standard desktop - laptops are an even bigger step away using entirely different construction, cooling, hardware, software, bioses, drivers, add in cards, power supplies, screens, keyboards, and mice. But yeah - apart from those they're basically the same.

I think a laptop section would be awesome - please, please, please can we have one - I promise to feed and nurture it!

Also, Beerguzzler and Phat Momma would you mind casting an eye on my m1710 thread here?

Cheers

Agreed, laptop section would be good, there are loads of laptop related threads in all the hardware forums.

Avoid onboard intel graphics like the plague tbh. It's based on completely different tech to Nvidia and ATI iirc and runs like a bag of sheet.

Amazingly enough Intel did a driver update for the recent'ish and the latest integrated units, massive speed boost and feature increase on the ones it affects. bf2/farcry playable on high settings at medium res

Except for the GMA X3000.

That's for desktops, laptops make use of the slower clocked x3100.
