15 months in jail.... for graffiti

That's my biggest gripe. It's not the length of this sentence, It's the length of this sentence in comparison to other sentences for what I consider far more serious crimes.

And now we have to keep them alive for 13 months.. Thats a hefty sum.
So it's worth it, It's also unlikely to be 15months. More like 3months. I'm sick and tiered of people getting let of for "petty" crimes. They cost huge amounts of money. They also generally lead on to more crime.

It should be seen as harsh as other criminals get short sentences. Does the punishment fit the crime. with out all the details it's hard to tell. But I bet they have previous records.

I agree - I think it is an obscene punishment, not only have they damaged the property but now they are using our taxes to house them for a year - that's just not on.

They should be made to do the community service to clean the graffiti off and have to pay for the clean materials themselves.

The system is just so dense sometimes.

It is a bit harsh IMO, give them 15 months community service cleaning their and others work off and make them preach to kids about not graffitting / doing it in the right places tbh.

Forget sticking them in jail and instead require them to spend a few days a week, for about the next half a year, cleaning graffiti off of trains and buildings.

Damage to the railways costs millions each year and causes delays and inconvenience to thousands of rail passengers; it should be taken seriously. And I rather doubt this was these two's first offence. It seems unlikely they'd have got time if they hadn't got previous.

Personally I reckon we should introduce a three strike system, any three criminal convictions and you get locked up for a minimum of 10 years.

Putting them in jail for that is only going to add to their criminality, get them to scrubs the community walls for 15 months.

Sentencing is a joke in this country.

My thoughts exactly, apart from 10 years. Small offences 2years, then a sliding rule up to a maximum of until dead.

Good. It is a shame they didn't get 24 lashes and be made to clean it off with a toothbrush as well.

A cull of the scum of society wouldn't go a miss either.

On the three strike rule; I have to agree except that I would make the third strike 25 years hard labour and sterilisation.

quoted for truth

I just read a story about a man who was beat about the head with an iron bar and ended up with a fractured cheekbone, eye socket and shoulder and the attack got a 14 month sentence:eek:

I don't think it's particularly harsh, I just think that punishments for other crimes are soft.
In my opinion they've been repeating this offence god knows how many times, so they have no respect for the law, and this is just what was needed.

Deserved.

So spending more of the tax payers money to keep the muppets inside is a better option than making them earn a way to pay it back?
And whoever the idiot that said graffiti isnt an art is a philistine, who are you to decide what or what's not art? In the wrong place, yes graffiti is inappropriate and makes the area look untidy but done well, it takes a decent amount of talent.
Prison isn't a cure for these types of offences and never will be, if you have talent and passion for something (which i guess the vast majority of posters on here dont), you want to express it as much as possible. What these yobs need is direction and the proper facilities to express them.

Some call it Graffiti others call it Art. Personally if it's good Graffiti then i prefer it to the grey cement walls the ********* council built in the 70's.
I would jail the ******** that built them rather than a decent Graffiti artist.
That sentence is Ridiculous. There so called damage adds up to 13k & it'll cost that in a matter of months to keep them in jail. Far better to give a ridiculous amount of community work than a ridiculous jail sentence.
Some times the law is an Ass.
