August NPD numbers (NA sales)

I'd guess from the OP where it says:

PlayStation 3 130.6K
Xbox 360 276.7K

That's only in the US where the 360 is notoriously strong.

It's hardly panic stations atm, if when PS3 is more affordable and has a bigger catalogue of games (GT5 etc) and the sales still don't pick up then is the time for Sony to worry.

It's simply too early to judge at the moment.

Believe me, Sony ARE panicking. The console might only have been out 12 months, but it's hardware is 2 years old.

When Microsoft launch a new console in 2 years Sony will NEED to launch one at the same time which then only gives the PS3 a short life-span as an equally powered console.

With rumours of more and more companies going the way of the Dollar it's not looking great for Sony. The Xbox360 is the force in Europe and North America. On a couple of occassions it has outsold PS3 in Japan also.

you have to realise that, 360 sales are bumped up by the fact that many people are buying them to replace the one that died on them. I have heard many a story where the 360 has died just after the warranty period.

Not sure how you've come to that conclusion.

Year on year sales have increased 46% for the console video game industry. Software sales are up 22% and hardware sales are up 94%! (References: Neogaf / Patcher).

It's never looked so good for the industry with the Wii pushing itself into mainstream culture and the 360 selling software. (It's outselling Wii/PS3 software combined and some).

Mate, I was just referring to the figures posted from Japan:

Also if you look at the JPN HW Chart it tells a different story:

Nintendo DS Lite - 77,488
Wii - 29,088
PSP - 15,564
PlayStation 2 - 13,360
PLAYSTATION 3 - 13,248
Xbox 360 - 1,286
Game Boy micro - 428
Game Boy Advance SP - 122

All I was saying is that the story that tells is that none of the consoles are selling particularly well in Japan apart from the DS. Or do you read the figures differently from myself?

I would guess that a lot more people got theirs repaired than those who got a new one though. Whilst I can't disagree that some of those figures are added by people who bought a replacement, I think the number is a lot lower than those who got a repair.

But, many people did not get there 360 repaired, they just bought a new one.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 360, not had it long but I do like it.

Which personally is just plain stupid as buying a new one (at £200+) would not prevent the inherent fault in the design instead of paying the £80 fee to get it repaired. There is no sense in making that decision but you are right many people did go out and buy a new console.

I don't see how the PS2 is still selling like that

Maybe its because its fairly cheap and has a better games line up than any other console available? It has every genre covered with classic games, from RPGs to party games to driving games, I would recommend the PS2 to anyone wanting a cheap way into gaming.

Sorry mate I thought you were referring to the US figures. Yes the Japan figures are pretty awful for everyone other than Nintendo.
