Vulcan to the Sky update - Norwich, 24th Feb

At Norwich?

Yeah, been in that one :D

Dunno if Google maps is old enough to still have the one in Blackpool on. Was sold a few years ago.

Looks like XM612 - old picture though - they've moved several things around due to new arrivals. ;)

They've got the Coltishall gate guardian Jag there now iirc. It's a beauty.

Tell you what - give me a few minutes after the GP has finished and I'll knock up a list of surviving vulcans and their locations on maps.google.com/.co.uk

Shouldn't take too long.

Still one at Southend?

I read that the Blackpool one was sold on eBay for £15,102. But because transport of the plane would cost £20,000 it was dismantled and sold for scrap...

Not quite.

The aircraft was up for sale for a long time, for far too high a price given the condition of the XL391

He stuck it on eBay, where it sold for 15K+ - far far far to much.

The new owner ran a pub and wanted it in the beer garden. However, he didn't check the condition of the aircraft before buying it and the structure of the aircraft was SO poor that it cound't be safely moved or even safely displayed without massive amounts of restoration.

During this time, the old owner was charging him parking on it - and the new owner once he found out the condition tried to get his money back.

The owner then finally sold it to a scrap merchant and it was hacked to bits on January 12th/13th. :(

The scrap merchants *Sandbach* tried to save the nose and engines for later resale. However when 'saving' the nose, they dropped it twice and smashed the bomb aimers blister and wrecked the underside. Cutting the nose off with a big chomping crane thing isn't the best way to save the nose. Especially letting it fall to the ground afterwards.

Nose was lsited on eBay for £2k - not a single bid.
They were approached later outside of eBay and asked how much they wanted for the nose - the answer.... £4k

Needless to say it did not sell and was scrapped along with the engines a few days later.

Sadly, XM603 will be joining her soon - but XM603 will be fully spares recovered. Engines will be recovered and go to one of the running Vulcans, most of the panels will be removed for other vulcans. Anything servicable will go to XH558

Very interesting. Thanks, Flib.

I was clambering around in the cockpit of a Vulcan at the B/mouth Aviation Museum the other week.

XH537 I believe. Its only the nose/cockpit, but its great to get inside and smell the history. :)
The ammount of dials and buttons is amazing. Talk about complex.
Brings the ammount of work involved to get XH558 back flying into perspective.

2008 is shaping up to be a great airshow year.

Newark Air Museum opens up their Vulcan on a fairly regular basis (ring and check before visiting)....

Newarks is pretty nice inside, the one at Coventry is usually open at the weekends as is Norwich.

Going to have to see if it's possible to get some cockpit shots of 558 now. It's changed quite a bit up there.

You can see that it was originally designed as a single pilot aircraft though. The rear is quite spacious for 3. Up top, it's a bit of a squeeze.
